Participants wanted: Research about masking and how it can lead to poor mental health

Note: This account only posts external research that has been approved by the NAS research team.

Research background

Hello, my name is Jagdeep and I am a PhD student at Birkbeck, University of London.  My research is focussed on the experience of masking in late diagnosed autistic and non-autistic women, but as this is a topic that is incredibly understudied, I am also looking at how it appears in the broader population too. I’m currently recruiting for participants for a couple of different studies.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Study 1: Experiential, Neural and Biophysiological Measures of Masking

Participants Needed: We are recruiting an initial small cohort of late-diagnosed autistic cis-women who mask (all ethnicities welcome) and were clinically diagnosed with autism after the age of 18.

What you will do:

  • a ~20-minute video call to discuss the three different phases before committing.
  • Part 1: 60 – 90-minute in depth interview about your experience masking
  • Part 2: Complete some questionnaires (approx. 30-45 minutes)
  • Part 3: Monitor your brain and physiological responses while you complete a computer based cognitive task in my London lab

Reimbursement: Participants will receive a £50 e-voucher

How to participate: See attached flyer for more information or click on this link An Exploration of Authenticity in Social Interactions: Interviews – Fill in form

Study 2: Authenticity and Mental Health Measures

Participants Needed: Autistic people over the age of 18 (clinical diagnosis or self-identified are accepted)

What you will do:

  • Complete an online computer-based task and some questionnaires.
  • This task will take approximately 45-60 minutes.
  • The task consists of three conditions: the first two are imagining yourself in two different scenarios – one where you are in familiar surroundings, with people you are comfortable with, and the other, the opposite. While imagining a scenario you will be shown a series of personality trait words and asked to indicate ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ if they apply to you in that context.  The third condition is to state if those personality traits apply to a known famous figure. There will be a practise run first.

Reimbursement: Prize draw for 2 x £25 e-voucher to be drawn in January 2027.

How to Participate: See the attached flyer. Please ensure that you are in a calm environment and can complete the task in one sitting.
