Public executions WTF?

If the title isnt'  a trigger warning in itself then the content maybe.

Pete Hesgeth, Trumps Secretary for War, has said today that a man who rampaged around a military base shooting and killing people will have his execution by firing squad live streamed! Public execution has been illegal under international law for decades, although today the Trump administration anounced that its putting sanctions on the International Court of Justice, after one of its former judges won a Nobel Peace Prize today.

I'm not in favour of capital punishment, I've heard all the arguments for it and I understand why some people agree with it, I don't and never have, I find it barbaric, cruel and demeaning and dehumanizing to all of us. I fear what would have happened to so many of those who have suffered miscarriges of justice, a postumous pardon dosen't bring anyone back.

I didn't think American [in]justice could sink any lower after the totally botched execution attempt Christa Pike, but I think live streaming an execution by firing squad is a whole new hell. What happens if someone young or vulnerable see's it? It could scar them for life, Hesgeth seems to think it's justice being seen to be done and that it will serve as a warning. I doubt if it will, but I think it could backfire on him and make more people oppose executions.

What do you think of public executions?

  • Update: Trump has officially declared the execution will not be live-streamed. There will still be an execution, though. AP News on Trump and the Public Execution

“Trump said on social media that publicly airing the execution “might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan."
But, he continued, “many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device.””

Let’s be clear that it is not an apology. It’s almost like he’s wistfully longing for a chance to show others how big and tough he is, but also saying he doesn’t have a choice because of “good and well meaning people”. This really sounds to me as if he was completely on board with the idea of making it a spectacle.

What’s interesting is VP Vance’s reaction, which this article I linked mentions. When I first saw in another article that Vance had stated he wouldn’t participate due to religious reasons, but didn’t outright say it was morally wrong, I was amazed. While that’s a weak statement that obviously panders to both supporters and deterrents of the public execution, it shows how perilous his position is. Since he’s essentially the golden child for the next presidential election (that is, if Trump decides not to), he’s stuck balancing a party that I believe is fracturing into three distinct parts: The MAGA hardliners that still worship Trump for his extremism, the center-right folk that regret voting Trump for a second term and want to go back to him being less (obvious) of a raving lunatic, and the church goers who only vote Republican because the Democrats are Satan’s beloved (or because Trump may be the anti-christ, but that’s a topic for another thread, probably).

So yeah, Vance is in a very tricky spot. How do you take such a polarizing idea like a public execution and satisfy the desires of all three camps in the Republican Party? Also, remember how Trump and his cronies threw Pence away after he condemned the Jan. 6 situation? That could easily happen to Vance any day now. Trump LOVES firing people; That’s his whole schtick. So if Vance wants any chance at running for president, he’s gotta do what he can to avoid that dreaded “You’re fired.”
