Public executions WTF?

If the title isnt'  a trigger warning in itself then the content maybe.

Pete Hesgeth, Trumps Secretary for War, has said today that a man who rampaged around a military base shooting and killing people will have his execution by firing squad live streamed! Public execution has been illegal under international law for decades, although today the Trump administration anounced that its putting sanctions on the International Court of Justice, after one of its former judges won a Nobel Peace Prize today.

I'm not in favour of capital punishment, I've heard all the arguments for it and I understand why some people agree with it, I don't and never have, I find it barbaric, cruel and demeaning and dehumanizing to all of us. I fear what would have happened to so many of those who have suffered miscarriges of justice, a postumous pardon dosen't bring anyone back.

I didn't think American [in]justice could sink any lower after the totally botched execution attempt Christa Pike, but I think live streaming an execution by firing squad is a whole new hell. What happens if someone young or vulnerable see's it? It could scar them for life, Hesgeth seems to think it's justice being seen to be done and that it will serve as a warning. I doubt if it will, but I think it could backfire on him and make more people oppose executions.

What do you think of public executions?

Parents
  • Executions don't deter murders - so it's about some sort of retribution that society is observing and playing out.

I seem to remember something about an ancient Babylonian king who first laid out written laws as far as we know so far - which includes "an eye for an eye" and the Icelandic laws that included expulsion and literal payment to families effected.

Not a fan of executions myself - I think it's a power game to give the appearance of doing something about a problem that doesn't tackle the real causes and a sign of gross social evil in my opinion.  Doubly so if public.
