Public executions WTF?

If the title isnt'  a trigger warning in itself then the content maybe.

Pete Hesgeth, Trumps Secretary for War, has said today that a man who rampaged around a military base shooting and killing people will have his execution by firing squad live streamed! Public execution has been illegal under international law for decades, although today the Trump administration anounced that its putting sanctions on the International Court of Justice, after one of its former judges won a Nobel Peace Prize today.

I'm not in favour of capital punishment, I've heard all the arguments for it and I understand why some people agree with it, I don't and never have, I find it barbaric, cruel and demeaning and dehumanizing to all of us. I fear what would have happened to so many of those who have suffered miscarriges of justice, a postumous pardon dosen't bring anyone back.

I didn't think American [in]justice could sink any lower after the totally botched execution attempt Christa Pike, but I think live streaming an execution by firing squad is a whole new hell. What happens if someone young or vulnerable see's it? It could scar them for life, Hesgeth seems to think it's justice being seen to be done and that it will serve as a warning. I doubt if it will, but I think it could backfire on him and make more people oppose executions.

What do you think of public executions?

  • I’ve been following the case of Christa Pike, if she had been a few months younger, she would have got a life sentence with the possibility of parole. There is documented history of abuse and bipolar disorder yet the sentence was still attempted. I’ve followed many death row cases and don’t think capital punishment is the answer.

The current state of affairs has Senators calling for the return of the electric chair, another has forwarded a motion to reinstate hanging, it’s all to attract votes. I don’t think shattering someone’s chest with bullets is any better, it’s all very barbaric.

Albert Pierrepoint stopped executing people as he said, “If execution is a deterrent for murder, then why am I still executing people?”
