Counselling- worth it or damaging if not done with a counsellor who understands autism?

Anyone like to share their experinces and opinions on counselling as a diagnosed autistic person please. I'm really struggling and I have the option to give it a try but I'm not sure.

  • I had all my counselling and therapy before I knew I was autistic, before I even knew what autism was and yes it did help loads. None of my counselling was via the NHS, apart from one very short 6 week period, I didn't get on particularly well and just thought he wasn't a very good counsellor and the system of 6x45mins sessions totally inadaquate.

  • I agree, 6 sessions that are so prescriptive are ridiculous. I was put on a wait list for 2 years to get those sessions. I was struggling so much that I paid privately in the meantime then when I got to the top of their list they refused me because I'd had private counselling (that I was struggling to afford out of desperation!)
