What is happiness and ...

what is contentment?

Do they differ from one another?

I believe they do and I don't think I have ever experienced happiness but I think I've managed to reach contentment in later life.

I think that if you suffer from depression that's an issue but I also suspect that if you take medication for that, as I do, it meddles with 'normal' emotions.

Also, what in life would make you happier or more content?

I have to say that having spent most of my life struggling financially, money helps a lot.

  • I just don't experience happiness or positive emotions (as far as I know). I was diagnosed with depression which was 18 as I can't honestly say that I enjoy or look forward to anything, this is still the case 3+ decades later.

I don't know if it's something like alexithymia where I'm supposed to feel something but I just don't recognise it but it is there. The alternative is something like anhedonia where I'm stuck in a low mood that won't shift. I've taken various meds over that time and none of them made much of a dent, I'm currently on a SMS (vortioxitine ) in an attempt to get it to move, I'm almost four months in and it's not looking promising. I've been on the waiting list for rTMS for the last year but that could still be a way off.

Feeling comfortable or content is probably as close as I ever get. Frankly it's pretty crappy as I get the crushing lows but nothing at the opposite end of the spectrum.

I do all the things that are supposed to help but nothing seems to change.

    Sorry to read this H.

This is something I've wondered about myself actually.

I hope there is an improvement for you.
