Autism, it’s just a 6 letter word.

I’m trying to open up a discussion as I’m confused.

I’ve been attending some support sessions and some people celebrate being diagnosed autistic and have a party.

Now thats upto them, their choice.

I know it’s me that needs to see things differently but I find this really difficult to understand at the minute.

All the issues lifelong I have.

Lets just pretend autism wasn't named autism for a minute, after all it’s just a word somebody has put to a set of behaviours etc, let’s say it’s called an apple sandwich instead.

So let’s just say you’re called Julie and I said “ Right Julie, you are just being born again, would you want to walk up and down the street repeatedly back and forth, touching hedges, gates, fences,  or would you want to not have to do this”

There’s surely not a person alive who would say they want to be born and do that and be an apple sandwich.

Thats just one behaviour/aspect, there’s plenty more but just one example.

Autism is just a word it’s the things that you seem compelled to do I hate.

Parents

  • Autism is just a word it’s the things that you seem compelled to do I hate.

Autism is self-centricism, hence the thing with:

"Idiosyncratic speech refers to unique expressions used by individuals on the autism spectrum, which can include made-up words or unconventional phrases that reflect their personal experiences." www.advancedautism.com/.../idiosyncratic-phrases

And thus the thing with saying that autism is just a word ~ whilst autism is a 'subjective' term describing 'objective' states of individual behaviourism, if it were just a word ~ there would be no subject to object relativity.

I am though heinously tempted to answer that I am feeling somewhat "apple~sandwich" on occasion! :)

  • Made up words, own language and echolalia were very strong in my whole childhood and teenage.

Likewise ~ only I ended up having to do the echolalia internally, often getting to the stage with single words where they seemed so strange I best not use them, i.e., had I made them up or were they actual words? I got rather stuck with the word 'the' at one stage, I remember that one particularly. There were lots of others, and I later met other divergents who were also as such inclined.

Excellent user name, by the way, and excellent avatar image too!! :)

My avatar picture and username relate to my tendency for thinking so deeply for so long that the sedimentation of life compacts around me ~ leaving me buried in my own un-done-ness! :)

I also had internalised echolalia after I got laughed at for repeating words.

I very quickly understood the nature of the problem given that people talked about people being mad if they talked to themselves or out aloud on a regular basis.

I still remember many of these made up words. I was annoyed by these words very often.

I recall some of them or more sequences of them, and actually had a song of them come along whilst learning to play a musical piece on a guitar that used to play of it's accord in my head until I got it done.

I was annoyed by these words very often. They repeated in my head till I got headaches and nausea. It still happens. Especially words that are written and I read them while walking in the street.

I got into Transcendental Tonal Chanting Meditation that involved about 25 years before I got to be able to think silently by way feelings instead, I had gotten rather sick of the din myself so going for some silence of mind was the logical step for me, although I was thinking in absolute terms somewhat! :)
