This may be a bit whimsical, but does anyone think that the classic image of a witch living alone with a "familiar" such as a cat and a special knowledge of potions and natural healing agents might reflect someone who could have been on the autistic spectrum?

On a similar note, women were sometimes locked away in mental institutions for unconventional behaviour - sometimes sexual but not always.

Control was ever present and in many ways, here and in other parts of the world, women are still being controlled and punished to varying degrees.

Definitely.

I have thought similar.

In fact I wonder how many autistic people in the past were singled out for punishment just for being different - especially females who had strict social codes to adhere to.

I would have been destined for the ducking chair.
