Autistic rage.

So I have noticed that I have a issue with autistic rage when I am getting disregulated, you want to react violently to stop other people causing you pain and disregulating you. Like a dog barking, a loud exhaust or people talking behind you. For me this is a challenge because its very vivid and what I want to do would get me locked up, but that nervous system response is very hard to process. I need to start punching stuff to release it from my body. I play wheelchair rugby and when I get angry playing its this energy which I am using. Does anyone else have any issues with this? Thanks.

  • I believe this is really just another form of a meltdown. We autistics have a bad habit of bottling up their emotions until we can't contain them anymore

  • Yes, I also tend to get irritated very quickly when overwhelmed or stressed. I used to get this with teachers back in school. There were some particular teachers I just couldn‘t stand (for different reasons… Bad teaching, annoying communication style or just mean/unfair behaviour) and during their lessons I‘d sometimes get random fits of rage due to very minor triggers. So much so that I started scratching the back of my hand, having to go to the bathroom to regulate or harm myself in other ways just to release some tension in order not to scream at the class or the teacher (I actually yelled at my class once for being loud… It wasn‘t actually THAT loud, I was just on edge).

These very over the top and not at all proportionate reactions happen in all kinds of situations (less nowadays though) but almost always when I‘m already a bit overwhelmed or frustrated.

  • You say autistic rage like it's something particular to autism, I'm not sure it is, or at least not entirely. You say disregulated, what in NT's would be rightfully angry and upset?

Why are we not allowed to be rightfully upset and angry?

Could it be that we're upset and angry because the world tells we can't be, that we have to grateful for every crumb that falls from the NT table?

Can we not have a normal bad day that leaves us feeling grumpy and irritable and like we want to kick things?

I tend to sublimate my anger and rage at the injustices of the world and the general annoyances, by watching violent films, every now and again, I need to see Russel Crowe as Gladiator shout 'are you not entertained?' to a crowd who've paid for blood and don't like it when it happens to fast. I need to see him batter the hell out of Commodus in the arena. I need to watch Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, bash a rapists head in with a door. I need to watch Katherine Winnick as Lagaetha, just being a good warrior.

I don't feel horrified by it anymore, I accept it as the alternative is far worse, I'd turn that anger inward and self destruct, or it would end up with someone on the recieving end of it, maybe justly, maybe not so much. If it was justly I wouldn't feel at all bothered.

  • Yes! But I don’t punch things. Usually I’m very rude to people when I find myself in situations like that. Sometimes I’m rude with people that don’t even have anything to do with the thing that is disregulating me.

  • yes - sadly I do experience this too. It’s like a storm that just explodes in me and when it passes I feel so shook up and horrified by myself. It happens when I am feeling completely overwhelmed- or when I’ve been dealing with persistent long term stress and just snap, it’s horrible and I hate myself so much for it.

  • Yep still do, I used to a lot more than I do now tho'.

I personally spent a long time in martial arts training and mostly "played this out" so the reaction I became most at risk of displaying being verbal rage - but as there's a lot of yelling in martial arts this tends to come out in a simmer rather than a full blown boil for me.

I still find it a tricky one to emotionally regulate.  I found that I was emotionally suppressing personally - the latter either increasing like a pressure cooker until it all squirted out or if the valve is jammed becoming apparently unaware of the pressure building until the cooker broke.  Sorry 'bout the use of metaphors - I hope that makes sense.

The issue that I now personally have is trying to find a "cleaner" energy to run off rather than anger - enthusiasm instead if i can raise it.

I hope that what I've written validates how you feel and maybe that it can be something else in the future for you.

  • Yeah I want to X people out, its scary because I am not like this at all, its not part of my nature or personality, but I am like so violent in my brain sometimes and its scary. Changed my entire demeanor and thought process too. But now I know why and what it is I can work on it. Its another defense mechanism. For me its when I am driving and stuck in standing traffic, I lose it.

  • If I am in a crowd, especially in the streets or outside generally, there is a build up of internal pressure making me want to lash out at people nearby, to create some space around me. I do not do so, but I really feel like doing so.
