Meltdown today

Today I had a meltdown for the first time in a few weeks. I thought I was doing okay, but today pushed me over the edge. I have stress about work, something personal in my home life and I was running late today while trying to please others and failing miserably. I have an ill friend and thinking about her is making me feel so sad a lot of the time. I take antidepressants, and I think they work for me, but I just had a very hard day today and it all started with this loss of control emotionally. I don’t know what I want from posting here but I feel I just want to tell people who might understand.

  • I don’t think my response is particularly helpful.  I can understand why your meltdown happened as it used to happen many times to me. You have demands on your time through work and your home life, and concern and worry about your friend. A cumulation of events is a recipe for a meltdown.

I’m retired now and can reduce the pace of demands. It helps reduce the likelihood of meltdowns occurring.

  • Warning, mentions SH!

Yes work is a part of the problem, I have found a way to cope with work and now things are changing again so I will need to get used to those changes and it will take me quite some time. I am going to let my manager know this will be hard for me. At the moment the personal problems are my main issue, I don’t cope well with uncertainty, I am terrible at time keeping but feel bad when I am late for someone. My expectations of myself are creeping up and this leads to meltdowns increasing in frequency (can you tell this isn’t new to me?) I hate how it feels when the meltdown is imminent, I feel so uncomfortable in the presence of others and previously these moments have led to some S.H. I haven’t engaged in that for more than a year though. If I stopped working I would essentially reduce my stress levels greatly, but without money I can’t afford therapy or my hobby which both give me support and joy.

  • I’m really sorry that things are so difficult at the moment.

I can’t manage uncertainty and the unexpected either but both are now vastly reduced for me.

I hope your manager is accommodating when you let them know how things are. It would be in their interest to work with you, given your current circumstances, but I know not everyone is sympathetic.
