Describing sensitivity

Hi, I have been trying to describe how certain sensitivities affect me. I have found it so difficult to put it into words. All I have been able to say is that the sounds are painful but without physical pain. Clothes and some materials feel scratchy to the point of feeling complete despair, smells are so potent that I can’t breathe. But my line manager thinks I am overreacting and told me to stop being a wimp. Does anybody else find it difficult to explain these things and does anybody have any ideas of how to put this into words?

Thank you

  • I'm not an expert on law, but if your line manager is aware you are autistic, and has called you a wimp, in the UK at least, thats a big no no!

My worst sensitivity is wet clothing or hair touching me. I literally want to vomit! I used to not even be able to leave the house if it was raining!

  • Hi, thank you for responding. My line manager says it’s just banter so I think I’ll just have to get used to it. Unfortunately it’s just the two of us in our work area so there’s no way to get away from him.

I agree with you about the wet clothes. Wet clothes make me feel like I am wrapped in cardboard. Not sure if that manes sense.

  • That's unfortunate! "Banter" is only funny when both people find it funny. This just sounds like a lack of awareness from your Manager. Does he know why you struggle with these things?

I can see where you are coming from with the cardboard thing. I don't feel like that as such, but the thought of wet clothes pressing against me just horrifies me for some reason!
