Career's advice

Hello everyone,

I have tried using this forum before but find it quite confusing and complicated to use so forgive me if I am doing it wrong.

I have recently turned 34, am female, a graduate in English Literature and have never started a career and do not know where to begin.

What I think I really need is proper career's advice from someone qualified in assisting neurodiverse people. I have trawled through the directory on here, but can't narrow the search to anyone specialising in careers. I have found a few people and websites online but they all cost a fortune.

I am really quite desperate as I am miserable in my current job, there is no future in it and it pays peanuts. I feel I am too old now to pursue something as I would as a fresh graduate. I have lost any skills that I may have previously had after years of unemployment followed by being stagnant in this current role that requires no qualifications at all.

I think I require counselling for many other things as well, particularly around my diagnosis, but need to prioritise finding an appropriate job first. I feel there was zero support following my diagnosis and any help out there seems to be for children, parents of children, or non high functioning adults. It feels as though there is no help or support for people like me and I am going to be stuck and miserable forever. Obviously, I hope that this is not the case, but that is how it feels at the moment.

I really hope someone can help point me in the right direction. Thank you so much!

  • In Google I asked what sort of job would suit someone with an English literature degree.

    It said:

"An English Literature degree suits jobs in media, publishing, marketing, and education, leveraging strong communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills for roles like journalist, editor, copywriter, content manager, teacher, PR specialist, technical writer, social media manager, and marketing executive. Graduates excel in any field needing persuasive writing, research, and clear communication, including law (as a paralegal), HR, and digital marketing."

There were a load of other links and more info.

Likewise, you can ask chatGPT "What type of job should someone with an English literature degree look for?" And it will give some options.

You can then ask further questions to refine it based on what you like. This is quick, free and easy and may help you. Any careers advice is unlikely to be much  better.

  • I (half) read a book about finding a career path called What Colour Is Your Parachute. It helps you to identify your specific skills and interests. This might be helpful...

  • Four years is impressive, by the way. If you look for a new job, that will look really good on a resume.

  • Ah, that sounds like a very social job. Do you feel like you’re getting burned out because it’s so much interaction with people?

  • Hello profdanger, thank you so much for your response! I currently work as support in Further Education so generally ages 16-19. It's just not for me. I am in my fourth year, but have got everything I can out of the role.

  • Good morning from America, mopsy01!

My job is helping people with disabilities find employment. However, I’m from the States, so I’m afraid I can only do so much to help you.

Do you mind me asking what field your current job is? You do not need to specifically name your employer, but knowing what kind of work you are currently in could help us to point you towards other fields that might work better.
