Overwhelmed post diagnosis

I had my assessment three weeks ago, post assessment I felt relieved and happy to have an explanation and the confirmation of what I felt like I always knew. However ever since that first day my emotions have changed massively, like I feel very agitated and upset. Alot of it seems to stem from having an answer at 29 years old, reflecting on the past a lot and not really knowing what my next steps are now I have the diagnosis.

Did anyone have a similar experience post diagnoses and do you have any tips for me?

  • Hey Connor. I was diagnosed last month at 40. lots of emotions but I found reading books really helpful (I've not read books for years btw). I like the science behind it all so I went for that first, then I read a few books on 'hints and tips', 'coping strategies and all that stuff'. I found knowing the science behind it helped me feel less angry. I'm still angry but much less so. I found a monthly teams group using the NAS website. 

    What works for me may not work for you but just wanted to say something that had actually made me fell better than worse over the last few weeks. I also sent the report summary to my GP, current therapy team and my IPS who is helping me get back into the workplace. 

    I bought an Autistic specific journal (if there is actually such a thing) it helps with breaking down the day and identifying triggers, feelings, etc.
