Why do i feel so lost when i'm alone?

I am experiencing mind blindness and feel stuck within myself ( can't think or move), this happens when i find myself alone unexpectedly. I am waiting for a post diagnosis assessment so i'm pretty clueless about traits of ASD and how we are affected so detrimentally by seemingly small, unexpected problems.

  • Would it help to have a focus?

If so, I would recommend making a list of the traits that your diagnosis has listed (or work off the list here: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/diagnosis/before-diagnosis/signs-that-a-child-or-adult-may-be-autistic ) and for each try to assign a half hour to research them.

If you do one or two a day then you will start to build up a better understanding of them, plus taking action can help you feel empowered.

A book that is good for looking up things by subject is: Autism For Dummies (2025) - ISBN 9781394301003 (paberback); ISBN 9781394301027 (ebook)

You can dip in and out of it easily without the need to digest long chapters to get a few nuggets of info.

As your knowledge grows you will start to see the issues coming from those traits - look for hints and tips on how to deal with these here, or just ask and you can start to find ways to make them less impactful.

Do you think this could be rumination?

    https://www.verywellmind.com/repetitive-thoughts-emotional-processing-or-rumination-3144936

We all experience negative thoughts sometimes, but when we spend *too* much time dwelling on them, it can create distress and even contribute to mental health problems. Rumination involves repetitive and passive thoughts focused on the causes and effects of a person's distress. The problem is that these negative thoughts don't lead to solutions.

Breaking the stasis seems to be the solution - do something physical will normally interrupt the cycle and if you can find something that occupies your hands for a while then your focus moves away from the rumination.

The article goes into a lot more detail than this.

So now you know you have more power over the trait.

  • Thankyou so much. It feels great to learn the language and definition of these experiences. I will look up rumination ( it definately resonates) it's suprising how something can feel so dibilitating and yet have such a simple solution ( once you know it).
