Do you have favourite sounds?

A couple of years ago I was into listening to binaural recordings (where the space in the recording is deeply spacially enhanced when listening), When normally quite sounds are recorded close up using this technique it can be orally spectaclar.

Nothing beats air and water sounds like large hollow waves exploding or sudden thunderstorms. I like popping sounds when they are controlled, and crackling bread crusts. 

They are funnier if you think of the phrase people use for their call 'My toe hurts Betty'. Now I just think, poor things.

I've been thinking about this for a day. I don't think there is any particular sound I like. 

For instruments I think the piano can sound the best. But it's not a particular sound.

The only one I can think of that might comes close is the sound of air. When I'm on the top of a mountain, with no people, roads, planes, in the middle of nowhere. It gently moves past you. But its not something you have very often and you need reasonable weather.

I love them too. And instrumental music, but vocal irritates me usually and the lyrics too.

I like rustling leafs, but rustling paper or plastic bags are awful. 

Rain hitting the ground (hard to separate from the sound from the smell of petrichor though - which I also love). 

Hands moving slowly through large amounts of Lego bricks.

The ringing silence of a really cold clear frosty night, it sounds like the afternote of a bell.

The sound of a razor cutting through hair.

The silence after a radio is turned off, its like a huge sigh of relief

That’s reminded me of another sound I love: the sound of distant church bells ringing.

Definitely water. I love the sound of a stream or waves from the sea.

I do also like some ASMR sounds. They really give your brain an itch. I'm not sure specifically which ones though.

The sounds when you stroke a cat, it’s very quiet but the fur against your hand sounds blissful. I also like the sound of opening a can of fizzy drink, the sea, rain on the window when I’m in bed. 

Oh, check out the BTO videos, they are fantastic for comparing very similar birds, and go through everything from plumage, size, flight, as well as calls. Nothing more delightful than being able to identify birds by their song, adds a whole other level to the listening.

I like muffled ding and dong sounds such as the muffled chiming before the main News at Ten on ITV. 

Nature sounds.

My dogs’ gentle, light snoring.

The clip clopping of horses’ hooves as they walk and trot.

Isn’t that funny about the crows - amazing! When I was a child my brother found an injured crow and we nursed it back to health - and when it was well again we released it - it flew away and that’s the only time I’ve ever seen my brother cry. I love the sound of waves on a shingle beach - as the wave pulls back moving all the shingle - just wonderful. Thank you Almond for starting this thread - it’s so lovely to think about this. One sound I find really eerie is the sound of a fox barking - it’s such an unsettling and evocative sound - excitingly spooky :) 

I had to google ‘whimbrel’ - I’ve never heard of that before - it sounds wonderful, thank you. I’d like to be better at identifying all the different bird calls - I think I’ll spend some time researching them online tomorrow. We have a lot of skylarks in the fields near us and I love them too. The sound is so idyllic and transporting. The other day I was looking out my bedroom window and there was a little group of long tailed *** (the cutest little things!) in the small apple trees, and blue ***, and our regular Robin who seems to love our small garden. I had dreadful toothache at the time but seeing these gorgeous little birds really warmed my heart. They’re little miracles. Sadly we had to stop feeding the birds because we live next to a farm and the bird food kept attracting rats off the farm. But the birds still come, and they always lift my spirits even on days when I’m really struggling. And a blackbird singing in the late afternoon/early evening - just beautiful.

1. The sound of my hi fi amplifier turning off. It makes a lovely click/switch sound

2. The sound of warm bass through headphones

3. The sound of the outside after a baking hot day, it just sizzles

4. Silence

For me it’s the sound of the wind. I adore it. I particularly enjoy the sound of the wind blowing through trees. Poplar trees have a very unique rustling sound. I also love the sound of the rain hitting the car. I often get a cup of tea and sit in the car at night when it’s raining, just so I can enjoy the sound. Plenty of noises I hate though ho ho ho 

I agree with all of the above except perhaps owls, I had a pair of them twit twooing outside my bedroom window one night, everytime I almost dropped off, they'd start shouting at each other again. I used to have crows living in some tree's near me, they would make an extraordinary range of sounds, some of the oddest were dropping twigs on those walking below their trees and then "laughing" at the surprised humans below.

Cat's purring is a lovely sound.
