Do you have favourite sounds?

I've put a list below, it would be nice to know if you have other or similar ones.

Examples of sounds I like:

1. Pink/Brown/.../ noises, also the smoothed versions

2. Some ASMR sounds like tapping, or wax writing, ..

3. "Pub" background sounds

4. Spatial or ambient music, something expansive with few sounds.

5. Nature sounds: either animal sounds, or rain / thunderstorm, or fireplace with crackling sounds, water streams.

  • I know this up is completely unoriginal - but definitely birdsong, and the sound of the breeze in the trees. I particularly love the sound of an owl calling near my house at night, and a curlew call. But all birdsong sounds like heaven to me. Also water - the sound of a gentle bubbling brook or gentle rain on the window.

  • All of this (including the owls near us too!) Curlew song is gorgeous, it's like a dream. Whimbrel is close but not quite.

Blackbirds and song thrush in the evening, chiffchaff in the woods, yellowhammer and even stone chat in the hedges.

Oyster Catchers are a little more shrill when they are making their breeding call rounds late in the summer over the house (we aren't even near the sea but they have come inland).

Spotting the buzzard or the skylark if your are lucky after hearing their call.

The rustling of a thousand wings as starlings murmerate above you.

    Bliss.

  • that's a beautiful selection TheCatWoman

  • The ringing silence of a really cold clear frosty night, it sounds like the afternote of a bell.

The sound of a razor cutting through hair.

The silence after a radio is turned off, its like a huge sigh of relief

  • Oh, check out the BTO videos, they are fantastic for comparing very similar birds, and go through everything from plumage, size, flight, as well as calls. Nothing more delightful than being able to identify birds by their song, adds a whole other level to the listening.

  • Isn’t that funny about the crows - amazing! When I was a child my brother found an injured crow and we nursed it back to health - and when it was well again we released it - it flew away and that’s the only time I’ve ever seen my brother cry. I love the sound of waves on a shingle beach - as the wave pulls back moving all the shingle - just wonderful. Thank you Almond for starting this thread - it’s so lovely to think about this. One sound I find really eerie is the sound of a fox barking - it’s such an unsettling and evocative sound - excitingly spooky :)

  • I had to google ‘whimbrel’ - I’ve never heard of that before - it sounds wonderful, thank you. I’d like to be better at identifying all the different bird calls - I think I’ll spend some time researching them online tomorrow. We have a lot of skylarks in the fields near us and I love them too. The sound is so idyllic and transporting. The other day I was looking out my bedroom window and there was a little group of long tailed *** (the cutest little things!) in the small apple trees, and blue ***, and our regular Robin who seems to love our small garden. I had dreadful toothache at the time but seeing these gorgeous little birds really warmed my heart. They’re little miracles. Sadly we had to stop feeding the birds because we live next to a farm and the bird food kept attracting rats off the farm. But the birds still come, and they always lift my spirits even on days when I’m really struggling. And a blackbird singing in the late afternoon/early evening - just beautiful.

  • I agree with all of the above except perhaps owls, I had a pair of them twit twooing outside my bedroom window one night, everytime I almost dropped off, they'd start shouting at each other again. I used to have crows living in some tree's near me, they would make an extraordinary range of sounds, some of the oddest were dropping twigs on those walking below their trees and then "laughing" at the surprised humans below.

Cat's purring is a lovely sound.

    Waves on the beach

  • Haha, yes, the 'rain' that follows indeed! Joy

  • The rustling of a thousand wings as starlings murmerate above you.

Quickly followed by the rustling of a hundred unbrellas being opened to avoid the inevitable "rain" that follows.

I remember seeing these a lot in late summer in Rome - hundreds of thousands of the birds on their way to Africa and all swirling about in clouds all over the skyline. I've never seen anything quite like it.
