Poppies and rememberance

Do you wear a poppy and go to rememberance services?

I feel really ambivalent about them and it. I wish there was more focus on those who came/come back brokens. I say this as the Grandaughter of one of the "lions led by donkey's", my Grandda suffered from what we now know as PTSD, he sacrificed his sanity and the legacy still runs through our family to this day. Why do we not remember the sacrifice people like him made?

Parents
  • Also the lions led by donkey's line is a absolute lie. More socialist nonsense to justify the overthrow of the Aristocracy, who fought and died in there hundred with there men, to defend the Empire.

  • Also the lions led by donkey's line is a absolute lie.

Can you point to any proof to this accusation?

The vast majority of the command structure in the army at the time was from the aristocracy so the blame for failed battlefield tactics (some recurring many, many times) falls squarely on their shoulders.

The vast majority of the upper echelons were certainly able to keep themselves out of harms way while sending the troops in to die so they weren't exactly taking the risks they expected of their own troops.

On the face of it the saying about donkeys and lions certainly seems valid but I'm open to being persuaded with erifiable facts.

  • This is a list ONLY of men who were *killed serving in World Wars* and
held,or if they had not been killed in World Wars would have succeeded
    to,
British hereditary titles that still exist or have titled relatives
still extant.Plenty of younger brothers, cousins, etc. also lost their
lives...and I have insufficient resources to track titles that died
out thanks to World Wars(e.g. Blythswood). The Viscounty of Cross died
out in 2005 with a peer whose younger brother was killed in WW II,1944.

(I am covering those killed in action and those killed on active
service, but not those who merely "died on active service".
Dying from wounds I count if the war was still on...Sir Ralph
Anstruther,Bt.,was born in 1921 to a father who died the next
    month from WW I wounds,that doesn't qualify,nor does the 11th
Duke of Argyll's father dying in 1926 of an illness contracted
in WW I[illness I count as "d.a.s." even if the war was still on].
Nor does being an apparently civilian casualty, like the
6th Baron Auckland,or being "killed by enemy action" like the
late Lord Kingsale's father or Lord Tweeddale's father.)

Nor,on the other side of the coin,do I count those who died as
heir presumptive to titles to which senior heirs were later born.

  • I think your point would better be illustrated by numbers than a very long list of names. According to this: https://roadstothegreatwar-ww1.blogspot.com/2018/05/did-british-upper-class-get-off-lightly.html?m=1

17% of Officers were killed in World War I, compared to 12% of "ordinary" soldiers. I assume this was the point you were trying to make?

It doesn't in any way refute the "lions led by donkeys" narrative, which is of course very simplistic but, if you are going to put people in positions of authority based merely on birth rather than merit, you need to expect criticisms when things don't work out. Sadly for you that would render your "High Tory" views as the complete absurdity that they are.

  • WW II was a disaster for Britain, however, this was because the vast expense of carrying on the war, sometimes alone, crippled the economy. It was also because we were stabbed in the back by our American ally after the victory. While the US was pumping money into Germany and other parts of continental Europe, it demanded that the UK start repaying lease-lend and wartime financial aid immediately. So, with industry crippled by bombing, the UK had to ignore re-equipping its war-damaged industries and start churning out products in order to finance its debt to the US. It is also why the end of the war saw rationing increase, not disappear. Some food items were rationed into the late 1950's. The 1950s were a boom time in the US, but in the UK the decade was drab, dreary and pinched.
