Question about who did your assessment as an adult

Hi,

I'm currently about to do an initial assessment as an older adult. If you have done one, how many people were involved - were you assessed by a single person from start to finish, or more than one? I noticed the assessment place mentioned a 'multi-disciplinary team' but in practice that is two people: one for initial, everything else by a second person. Is that normal for adult assessments?

Thank you!

  • My private diagnosis was also assessed by a Clinical Psychologist and a Speech Therapist

  • Hi

My assessment for ADHD was with Psychiatry UK with one psychiatrist. I had an initial approximately one hour appointment, then once more information had been gathered from my parents another shorter appointment when the same psychiatrist confirmed my ADHD diagnosis.

My assessment for autism was with Psychiatry UK, with a psychiatrist and a ASD support worker. It was an approximately one hour appointment and it was confirmed I had Autism.

Wishing you the best with your assessment (•‿•)

  • I just had one psychologist who did the lot, but whilst I think he was good, there was much less understanding of ASC and ASC in women in particular. Once I was diagnosed I didn't have any assessements fr additional needs or anything, I was just left to get on with it, the thought being that I'd managed for 50 years and could keep on managing.

  • I had an initial triage appointment that involved two people and then a later 'full' in person diagnosis that involved two different people. One clinical psychologist I think, and one speech and language therapist.

And my dad was also interviewed by telephone which was by someone else again.

  • I was just seen by one person. It was a validating experience as he really understood autism in women, picked up on many things without me needing to explain but also completely accepted that I am the expert on me. At the end of the assessment he said he was happy that I met the diagnostic criteria. It did then get discussed with someone else in the assessment team before I was given the official written diagnosis though.

I think it is common practice in a lot of places for their to be two people involved in the assessment though.

  • I’m an older adult, and I had my assessment completed last year by a ‘multi-disciplinary’ team comprising a Clinical Psychologist and a Speech Therapist.

  • In my case, which was private, I was seen by 2 people. I think some of my written submissions were checked by another, but fed back.
