Failed by Society

Hello. my name is Danielle and I am a 34 year old awaiting an official diagnosis of Autism and also in the process of having a referral done for ADHD.

That's about all the small talk I will allow, now on to the main topic now that I have officially introduced myself to the community.

I see the world moving so far in some ways like technology, bigger companies and buildings ect. The world is moving at a fast growing rate in materialistic ways but I feel we are back tracking in our humanity and at an emotional level as a Society.

From my experience those with Autism or any other mental condition that differs from societies normal have been excluded, pushed to the outskirts of society due to our world leaders being so behind in understanding that we are different and have built the world around the majority and typical-brain while excluding those with a neuro-brain. I understand the world is trying to catch up, companies have been rolling out training, programmes to engage and get those with mental conditions or disabilities back into work and society but there just isn't enough support and hasn't the damage already been done?

What about those that have already been excluded and ostracised in their environments for simply daring to be their unique selves, standing up for social justice and their own truth.

I have faced such ostracising tactics more than once for simply being who I am and at an extreme level once my social justice radar went off. I probably stayed in an environment longer than I should because I wanted to give a person or group better understanding of the struggles I face, holding onto hope that by speaking my truth I could help or prevent someone else from suffering the same situation.

What I've learned so far; some people want to understand and to help but not everyone has the power to make that change on a big scale.

Everything has to be passed on up to the person(s) with more power to make change and policies and while these leaders delay on real change many around the world are suffering more than they can ever understand.

Is it any surprise many of us choose to withdraw from this society.

For me I was always introverted but I tried to fit into the world at the expense of the suffering of my mental, emotional and physical well-being.

The system has failed me in my adult life so now I have started to slowly become a selective recluse.

Why would I choose to attempt to fit into this Society again?

When I see real world change then I shall consider it... until then I will keep speaking my truth in anyway I can.

My purpose for joining this community and post is to hopefully find any like-minded folks on my vibe level, while also interacting with others to share my knowledge but also to gain further insight into others life experience.

I consider myself a student of life.

There's always more to learn.

Shine Bright all.

  • Hi and welcome to the community. I'm a woman in my sixties and retired now, and I'm very content staying at home and only interacting with my partner, although  did recently meet up with an old friend who is very much on my wavelength in many ways. I tried to live a "normal" life for decades but now I just do what I want. I enjoy reading and playing video games, and since being retired I've also done a few free short courses with OU open learn.

Technological advances for me have benefits and drawbacks. I miss having certain shops on the high street which shut down due to online competition, and I hate social media for how it affects people and makes them often feel inadequate or bullied. But the internet allows me to have interaction with others I find interesting on this website, it allows me to get groceries delivered without the stress of negotiating supermarkets, and enables me to study online or research stuff I'm interested in.

I agree that some people are ostracized by society for being "different", but others are able to use their unique skill sets to benefit society in an environment where they have similar people around them, such as laboratories and IT companies. Unfortunately we don't all have those skills, but at least here on this forum we can share our trials and successes. We have a thread called "3 good things" to remind us that it's not all doom & gloom! Slight smile

I hope you enjoy being part of the community.

  • Hi Lotus, thank you for the lovely welcome and I am glad to hear you are happy with your partner and your home life. I am also past my attempts of fitting into an normal life and will never go back to trying to mask to fit in.

My circle is extremely small myself with some close friends and family that I catch up with sometimes. I've also reached out to local autism groups but much like yourself I gave up on social media and only use chatting apps, online gaming and now this community too.

I agree, as with anything there are pros and cons and it's great we can do all this stuff online but in my opinion perhaps world leaders focus needs to take a little step back from the technology side and work on helping humanity grow further on an emotional and evolution level to create a more understanding, accepting and diverse culture.

Yes, many have been lucky to find support within their professions/environment to be supported in using their skill set to help advance humanity, technology and the world in different ways and it's always great to hear these positive experiences. I suppose i have a knack for seeing an area that can be improved and that's why I am speaking out about those who have suffered negative experiences like myself.

Perhaps for some of us our skill set is right here finding this community, sharing experiences, knowledge and hope.
