Going away for a weekend

Hello I am going away to a caravan park from this coming Friday to the Monday and I am wondering if there's any advice on how to reduce my anxiety around going. Its largely due to the change in routine and because I quite worry about sleeping and sleeping away from home is always harder. I am with my parents and my brother fyi. Any advice?

  • It was perfect timing thanks. I really appreciate it

I find it helps a lot to change the way I think about it, so rather than seeing it as there will be problems with my routine changing, risks of bad sleep etc, I will try to turn the things causing this into a positive.

I try to think it will be fun, there will be new things to see and do, exciting experiences ahead and while some may have some negatives (eg sleep will be impacted) the balance will overall be fun.

The whole process of thinking positively about it actually helps you have fun I find. If you worry then you are already in a negative mindset and this drags it down for you and those around you so mask a bit to get things going and try to enjoy the rollercoaster ride of the holiday.

I realise that being with your family can be a drag so see if you can get away to do some stuff on your own if you get a chance.

The experiences, both good and bad, build character and give you a richer life in the end.

  • Hi, I hope this response is not coming too late. I emphasise with you- I actually haven’t gone on holiday anywhere for years as the only holidays I felt comfortable with were hiking holidays (and can’t go anymore due to injuries). I have had to move around a lot though over past years so maybe I can give you some ideas. I would recommend bringing some familiar items- I am quite difficult with food so I tend to bring some familiar food (and/or check where I can eat in advance to ease my anxiety). I also find it nice to take some of my favourite tea bags (not sure if you drink tea) and whenever I moved I also took my favourite cup with me. I also have my teddy bear which goes with me (never too old for those). It doesn’t have to be those items- could be anything familiar that makes you feel more at ease. Maybe you could take something from your bedroom, like a pillow or blanket or something familiar if sleeping away from home is a concern. I also find that planning and finding out more about where I am going helps me. Not sure if any of those ideas are of use. I understand your anxiety. Hope you have a good trip!
