Now I'm scared

Starmer has announced that he's introducing digital ID cards and as yet theres no alterantive for those of us with no smart phones, althought "they're going to consult" on it, who with or how we don't know. But quite frankly this news has me really scared, terriied, I'm shaking and may have to take some anti-anxiety meds.

I can see a situation where my Mum, me and a few of our neighbours are going to be illegal in our own country and unable to access services.

  • It’s all about gaining property and footing in the uk. Uk property, arguably British genes in your relatives have high value. The wave we see now are not skilled economic migrants, because we are such a democratic country the laws are so humanitarian that it used to take many years for cases to be taken to court, in which time the immigrant may have disappeared or returned then retried the route. This is the system being abused. In the cities there are communes all over being managed by visa holders. This is what is scary you could let your flat so someone with the ‘legal’ right to rent but they sublet to all number of people.

  • Possibly not but I'm not sure thats a good enough arguement for it. I'd be far to sensible and want to do real things, like making sure we use our existing laws to their fullest extent before introducing new one's, or stopping land banking by big building firms.

  • I think people forget sometimes that not everyone has smart phones. That was my first thought. If they were provided free in whatever form then perhaps it is a good idea. I presume it could be used to vote.

According to the news last night, it sounded like most other countries already have one.

  • You couldn't be worse than any other PM we've had! Smile

  • Good Gods woman don't try and give me that sort of power, I'm a diplomatic incident waiting to happen as it is!

  • Hear, hear!  for Prime Minister!

I already have a birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport, National insurance number, NHS number, and Government Gateway account - I can be easily identified, as can most people like me who were born in the UK and have lived here all our lives. Why waste money on getting us more ID when the resources could be used in a better way?

Oh, just a thought - maybe it's not actually about illegal immigrants but is a crafty way of beginning to exert more control over the populace? I don't think it's going to affect us oldies much, but as we expire and the population starts to be made up of those generations who have always had mobile phones and computers, that tech could possibly be used like "Big Brother". It didn't happen in 1984, but maybe it might happen by 2084?

  • If it's really about stopping illegal immigrants from renting or working, then why not put all the money into policing our existing laws better, it's already illegal to rent a house too or employ an undocumented migrant, so how will this help stop it happening? It's just putting another burden onto ordinary people going about thier normal lives. I think we need to find who's housing and employing undocumented migrants and prosecute them and imprison them for long periods of time, those employing and housing irregulars are probably involved in other sorts of criminality, such as slavery, tax evasion and bringing people into the country in the first place. Lets work more on that, rather than punishing people who were born here or live here quite legally.

  • If it’s a government Id it probably won’t be accepted as photo ID for opening banks etc snd thats where I would have an issue with it and also please just make it a physical card becuase digital documents can be forget so much easier

  • I posted about this. Lisa Nandy has just said it will not be compulsory to have your digital ID on your phone.  You will just need to have a digital ID.

  • It just seems that they are trying to crack a nut with a sledgehammer. From what I understand it's about proving your right to be here and to access services.

It just seems a bit unnecessary and probably massively costly. I suppose it'll fill the gaps for the ones of us the may not have a passport or drivers licence, it'll also fix the issues around requiring ID to vote.

Some people don't have or don't want smartphones, will there be an alternative?

  • The Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has just said that while it will be compulsory to have a digital ID, it will not be compulsory to have it on your phone.

  • If it's a digital ID, it isn't just going to be stored on one device. It should be very easily looked up.

I'm a bit confused by what the marriage of your friends has to do with ID though.

  • I'm not too bothered about an ID. I carry an ID all the time anyway and I already know how easy it is for the police to look that up. I don't really see a big issue with having a digital ID. Being chipped and literally tracked however, I would absolutely be protesting about.

I hate how people act towards immigrants, illegal or not. It's vile. They need to come somewhere as where they're from isn't safe. But I also completely understand we can't take everyone indefinitely and we can't have unknown individuals entering and living without any awareness of who they are.

  • Some people regardless of age find it easier to spend cash than card ita easier to track without back tracking to an app all time time or the alternative and not tracki g jt also whilst you could track friends easily with chips your employer could also go oh your only at home I thought you had plans to go out why don’t you come do that shift?

  • It requires an act of parliament to happen I believe. So that's 3 readings in the lower house and 3 in the upper. Plenty of opportunities for issues to be raised and clarity to be found.

I'd not be panicking at the moment. This will not be happening in days or months.

Given the public sectors woeful record in IT, it will take years, not work and cost 10 times the estimate, which Reeves won't be able to pay for.

  • It’s ok, I’m not offended by anything you have said. As I said I don’t really understand it and I try my best not to get involved too much as I’m aware of arguments flaring up. Like discussing religion I guess.

  • Sorry, I should try to restrain myself rather than commenting on politics, but I've always found demonization of minorities repulsive.

  • So basically what he is doing is wasting time is that right? Am I allowed to say is this a certain referendum fault? Or does that have nothing to do with it? Politics are super confusing for me Confused

  • You need it so that politicians can pretend they are doing something about the tiny percentage of immigrants who are claiming asylum (referred to as illegal in modern parlance).  Although it clearly won't make any difference as those who obey the law will continue to scrape by and those who ignore the law will carry on as they were.
