Which noise cancelling has been best for you?

Hi!

To help my sensory needs, I use:

  • chewing buddy for anxiety relief;
  • Noise cancelling earplugs

The in-ear earplugs noise-cancelling does not cancel enough noise from the surroundings in my experience. The over-ear earphones or over-ear Muffs can be uncomfortable: too heavy for using many hours a day and the ear-pressure becomes painful.

Recently, I noticed that earphones (those that do play music) have some sort of white noise for noise masking (replace uneven noise with random/even noise). Another option is indeed to simply play some white/pink/brown noise.

Anyways, I wrote that just in case it helps other in the search, and I would be also curious about what have you found and of any advice.

Feel free to share any other gadgets or practices that you use and help your sensory needs.

The AI-Chatbots may have some good suggestions as well, but I'm not so interested in talking to it at the moment.

Have a nice day!

  • I love ANC earphones - active noise cancelling, because you can put them on without music or a talk show or something and the ANC mode cancels out most noise or seriously mutes it. I live near a main road and have a hand car wash downstairs and a neighbour with a bathroom fan next to my head which has really been causing me serious issues. Now I can cope until I manage to find somewhere quieter to move. I use Jlab ones because they link automatically to both my phone and computer (at the same time) with me having to faff about. They fit over my ears comfortably and help keep me from overwhelm. Also they are no too pricey.JLab JBuds LUX ANC Smart Active Noise Cancelling Headphones - Wireless Over Ear Headphones with Microphone, 70+ H Playtime Foldable Bluetooth Earphones with Multipoint & Customisable Sound, Graphite: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I have also used their in ear pnes, but don't find them comfortable for long use, though they do find for a few hours. I have heard that amazon make memory foam covers for in earpods which can make them more comfortable to wear, but they are 16 pounds so I've not tried them yet.AZLA Foamax Standard(M) Memory Foam Earbud Tips for Wireless Headphones - Noise Canceling Earbuds Replacement Compatible with Sony, Beats, Samsung, Skullcandy, JLab: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I also use over ear ear defenders which work well but can be very uncomfortable - I think it rubs on a nerve in my face, but if I put something on my head then it's lifted a little and is much better.

I use Flare calmer for situations where I must hear what is going on like visits with people - they just take out the worst of the spiky noise and make it a bit more manageble.

  • Hi, I use loop earplugs for noise cancelling. They are really good and offer different ones depending on needs. It depends on each person but I think I went for some of their basic ones just to dampen noise a bit (I have a very loud neighbour that doesn’t have an ounce of noise awareness).

I hope you can find some useful advice on here!

Good luck and if can be any further help, I’m happy to try and assist

  • I use Q20i Soundcore - got them for £27 on a deal.  They are over the ear type but very light and moreimportants soft too , some others I gave away as they were too tight on my head.

For me the noise cancelling is good enough

I think there been previous posts that there's downsides to wearing noise cancelling headphone for extended periods anyway

I tend to use them for fairly short periods - like recently on the train for a couple of hours and in the evening if I want to concentrate.  Otherwise I just use sound (5 Echo Devices) around the house that I switch on and off as I move around.

Loops are OK but I have tinnitus and so find them a little counter productive, they are OK if say in a noisy restaurant but I don't seem as mad on the them, as many others seem to be, or whether that just their marketing, I largely think the benefits of them is overstated personally.

  • Ah ok I will have a look into them myself

  • Thanks for your comment anyways! I found some which are in the comment below (Duppio, 47dB, made in Germany)

  • I know my dad had special noise cancelling headphones when he’s in the cockpit on the aeroplane but I’m not quite sure if they are for aeroplanes only. I remember using beat headphones with noise cancelling modes which helped but I can’t remember which model it was. I remember using them back in 2018. Also like playing some game songs through those headphones too. Sorry I can’t be more help

  • Eventually bought this ones which I found after searching for a while. They are supposedly 47dB (my earlier ones were <30dB) for a similar price. I normally avoid Amazon, but they were ten extra GBP on eBay and other sites.

  • I did check those out, but eventually found which I will include in a separate comment as well, they are supposedly 47dB (loop quiet and my earlier ones were <30dB) for a similar price. I normally avoid Amazon, but they were ten extra pounds on eBay and other sites.

  • I use the loop quiet. I absolutely love them. When I’m wearing them it’s like giving your ears a hug. Whilst they don’t stop noise, they just make it much more quieter.

  • The comfort level of the in ear pods and plugs vary between brands. I wish I could cope with the over ear type as they would be more effective.

  • See im the opposition einhalte anything in ear and can only wear them for short times but over ear I can do more but not in summer

  • I don’t like the feeling of pressure and blocked ears with ear defenders and over earphones. although the loop earplugs are comfortable, they don’t always block unwanted noise.

When I need to focus, I like to set my AirPods to the noise cancelling function and stream white noise or nature sounds. Other times I listen to podcasts, audiobooks and music. The AirPods have a transparency setting if I need to hear people speak or to have a conversation.

There is a huge selection of white noise and nature sound albums and tracks available now. I prefer the higher pitched sounds as they make my whole being feel lighter.

  • These are my "go to" pair for ANC over the ear which are lightweight (230 g):

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/RUNOLIM-Cancelling-Headphones-Bluetooth-Microphone-Black/dp/B0C8SJSL9H

I like that they also include a "transparency mode" toggle button:

    - so I can listen to someone (and hear my reply voice normally) when they come to speak to me, and

    - I also use that as I prepare to safely cross the road as a pedestrian (our local city includes many hire e-scooter / e-bike ranks and it is a good plan to hear them rattling over the potholes as they hurtle in your direction).

  • Somethings I will pay big money for I have it some I wouldn’t if I had infinite money it’s all about are they offering a product or solution someone else isnt

even loops in ear monitors seem over priced for what they are plus I’ll always prefer on stage monitors

  • Cheap foam ear plugs, the ones used for ear protection on construction sites, are very effective. I wear them at night, or rather from around 4 am onwards, as they get uncomfortable if I try to wear them all night. The ones I'm using claim -33 dB of noise protection (that's a factor of about 1/2000). I sleep much better in the mornings when I wear them. I buy them in my local hardware store for about 50p a pair.

During the day, to cancel traffic noise and background noise in busy spaces (e.g., supermarkets), I use active noise-cancelling earbuds. I prefer the earbuds, as they are more discrete than over-ear headphones and I can wear them with a hat (which blocks a lot of light from overhead). If I'm walking outside, I'll play music; if I'm shopping, I just use the ANC. They definitely help to keep me calm—a night-and-day difference, really. I think the cancellation is about -20 dB (a factor of about 1/100). Some noises are more likely to leak through than others, though: the rustling of plastic bags really stands out.

My ANC earbuds are the Anker Soundcore P40i. Getting the fit right can be a little tricky, but they are good value and have great battery life. They are usually on special for around £45, so don't pay the full £70 RRP. Are they the best? Almost certainly not, but they held up well when compared to my son's top-of-the-range Apple AirPods.

I tried out the Sony WF-C700N before getting the Soundcore ear buds. The Sony's fit was good and they damped traffic noise well, but they didn't cancel most sounds and the left earbud's battery wouldn't hold a charge, so they had to go back.

I refuse to pay what Loop are charging for 2p worth of plastic. (My justice and fairness trait kicks in really hard at the mere thought. I'd better stop now.)

  • Im nkt sure how many people know but you can gwt actual net rated Bluetooth headphone ear defenders which mean tmthw music doesn’t have to be at high volumes and trust me hearing damage isnt fun

and they come In various nee so let’s say it’s 30 that means if the noise is 80db you take way 30bd so it will be a slot less noticeable 50db where as noise cancelling block all noise out which can be bad for awareness

also some come with fm/am tuners and antennas so the am fm has(slightly) better line of sight since height is might and most have a auxiliary jack port
