What does this phrase actually mean, we keep getting told we live in a post truth world, but do we really? Does it mean I can choose not to believe in anything I choose and claim some kind of discrimination of someone tells me to stop being so daft?

The rot started with all the partial truths, half truths, spin, manipulation of statistics and deliberate misrepresentation of data. Having established it was ok to intentionally mislead, which is what most of politics is about, it is only a small step to just lie.
Sounds like more Newsspeak, to me.
Everything's up for debate, these days, as a reaction towards ongoing censorship and defamation. Too many well-intentioned people were mentally destroyed, in this primordial soup. Especially with Schools becoming Makret Research.
Thats the sort of thing I mean, I think I first became aware of it during Trump's first term in office, when they started talking about "alternative facts", it makes no sense at all. I'm not a black and white person, and love the grey areas, but this is too much even for me. You have to have a factual basis to work from, you can't suddenly decide that something isn't true because you don't like it, I mean what would happen if people suddenly decided gravity was a lie, would they be surprised that they and everything in thier vicinity didn't start floating about? I think for me worst part of all this is the lack of challenging and calling it out, I know it's more difficult when it a President, but even so!
Oh yeah, post-truth is a huge problem here in America. It really feels like there are two separate realities here that are completely incompatible with one another.
I love the clangers too, but its a shame what was supposed to be a more serious thread has become one about the clangers instead.
I love the Clangers, the soup dragon was a real favourite and maybe a distant relative?
I knew reference to the Clangers would spark some comments.
I loooved that programme.
I can still hear their voices now, without actually listening, 200 years later.
Thank you for the info, especially relating to the important stuff ie The Clangers.
There is now a BBC Knit Your Own Clangers Pattern:
Oxford Dictionaries reference (2016):
"post-truth – an adjective defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief’."
... recently, I would say the utterances of The Clangers seem to make more sense than some of the "News" coverage.
For the younger / international among our community:
The Clangers (Stop Motion Animation UK TV Series, of the 1969 - 1974 vintage); "Far from Earth, on a distant planet, live The Clangers".

or, people can knit a BBC Clangers Mug Cosy?:

As a child, my knitting skills were "very basic". Therefore, a Clanger was instead made from one of my Father's black, ribbed, socks (...we didn't have a colour TV), complete with felt feet and a detailed sparkly waistcoat (I wish I took a photo).

we keep getting told we live in a post truth world,
I've never heard this phrase before so I don't know where you are hearing it.
If you want to believe The Clangers were real
I don't 'believe' it, I know it to be the truth.
I believe the world is round, because if it were flat then cats would of pushed everything off the edge, lol.
Seriously though, I don't understand it.
I'm not sure it means much, same as most other sound bites.
It applies to politicians, not ordinary people.
Politicians have always lied. They used to resign or face electoral consequences if they were caught. But some decided not to resign and just keep going. So the media decided to call it a post truth world.
It is also ties into the disinformation being spread online, by trolls, bots and foreign agitators.
Then you have the issue of who decides what is true, how do they know and do they also have an agenda.
You can believe, or disbelieve, pretty much whatever you like.
People can also tell you not to be daft, as long as they are polite. It's freedom of speech.
If you want to believe The Clangers were real and the moon is made of string that is up to you.
