New Years Resolutions

Seems like the appropriate time of year to pose this question:

What are your thoughts on New Years Resolutions as a concept? Do you try to set and follow one at the start of each year, or is it something you don't give much thought to? I personally never gave them much thought as a concept but this year I think i'm going to set myself some for once i'm home.

I'll be looking to try to do three things by the end of 2025:

1. Get myself to the gym at least once per week for at least 1-2 hours of exercise in something I like.

2. Find a new Hobby or Club to join for socialising with people.

3. Learn how to drive, and with luck maybe get myself a car for the first time.

I'm not expecting to do any of these right away; most of these I will most likely only be able to do within the last half of the year, but I still want to try to achieve it. Lets see if we can get a positive discussion going!

  • My new years resolution is 1080p.

Because we're getting a new TV for our snug.

  • Try to be kinder to myself

Get a handle on my stress

Get some form of exercise routine going

I'd like to do a history degree but currently my foggy brain isn't planning to cooperate, maybe if the other things happen on the list it may help.

  • I know. My advice was for anyone who happened to come across the thread, rather than directly at you.

  • The only resolution I kept, is not making them, if I want to do something then I do it when my energy is with that thing, waiting for an arbitary date in the calender means I will probably have forgotton or can't be bothered as my energy isn't with it at that point.

  • I agree. This sense of pressure to start with new habits just because there’s a new number on the calendar will only fuel my tendency for demand avoidance.

  • I've never bothered with it. I like to be in control of my life and decide when I do things. The only thing I really do by the calendar is Christmas, but that's because everything shuts down and I do actually like sitting at home eating good food and watching a movie or playing games. But we don't follow all the traditions - one year we had chilli for Christmas dinner.

  • I wasn't asking for advice, but your comment is appreciated all the same. This thread isn't about me, it is a discussion on what people feel about a particular tradition. I'm aware of the difficulties and will be working at my own pace, don't worry.

  • I don't like New Year's Resolutions. If you decide on something you want to do, or even better, someone you want to be (e.g. I want to be an athelete, so I will start working out and eating well), then you shouldn't wait until the 1st of January, you should do it now. That being said, if it helps motivate you through those first few weeks where you are making it into a habit, then go for it.

My advice, if you want to add a good habit to your life, is to make it as easy as possible. Don't force yourself to spend 2 hours at the gym every day, as you will tire of this in a few days. Instead, set yourself the target of 'turn up at the gym and do one exercise, then go home'. You'll quickly find yourself wanting to spend longer there, and it will become a habit more easily. It also means that on those days that you struggle to get yourself up and out, you can tell yourself "I only have to do one exercise", which makes it much more manageable and easier to do.
