Advice!

I'm at a point at the moment where I'm really stuck with how to word certain things. I struggle to communicate effectively (I.e

Rush talk, tripping over words, words coming out in a bumbling mess etc!)

I just feel like i need to have some kind of wording readily available for moments like these without just blurting out 'I'm autistic and I struggle to speak sometimes'

It's that weird look people give me that I've had my whole life. It's like a moment that their face changes and I can feel that they think I'm a bit odd.

And also, as my child has both conditions too, I'm struggling to navigate those words again if he's having any kind of outburst i.e

kids birthday parties. It's knowing what to say to other mums too when a situation like that arises

  • If you find that you or your child are being incorrectly judged by others over the word 'autism', then just leave it out. As an alternative just say the you or your child. "Have/has a condition that sometimes interferes with the ability to process speech". You could have something similar written on a small card that you can carry with you for more difficult situations. I carry an autism alert card because of selective mutism in my past and, ironically, just having that option available lowers my anxiety and usually enables me to speak fluently.
