Jaffa cakes are they a cake or a biscuit?

Hi everyone time for another debate as the bully xl ban and the pineapple on pizza went so well. Tonight’s topic Jaffa cakes are they a cake or a biscuit? I think biscuit as their to small to be classed as a cake well that’s my opinion. Over to everyone else cake or biscuit?

  • Was it  that started that one? It was fun, anyhow...

  • From an engineering perspective, the essential difference between Cake and Biscuit is their differing structural properties and usually density

We could've done with you on the 'What is Cake?' thread! Joy

  • Well, they're called cakes, so...

    Yeah!

  • Maybe marmite yay or nay?

    It's ok...

  • Marmite is something I like but have to be in the right mood for. Sometimes I really crave it and then other times I'm not interested.

  • No

    We've done this

    At least 4 times before.

It's a cake because it goes stale whereas a biscuit goes soft. Or in Ireland because of the moisture percentage.

We need to find another one... Maybe marmite yay or nay?

  • I looked it up online. Wikipedia says they are cake Upside downUpside down

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_Cakes

  • They are definitely cakes. The clue is in the name. Blush

  • I was always under the impression cakes go hard, biscuits go soft. I believe Jaffas go hard, so, therefore cake.

  • From an engineering perspective, the essential difference between Cake and Biscuit is their differing structural properties and usually density. (although cake is usually less dense than a biscuit, some cakes can be incredibly dense).

Cakes however are always differentiable from biscuits when their hardness is measured. The midpoint between the softness of a cake and the hardness of a biscuit is known as the "Cookie" region.

So Jaffa cakes are clearly exactly as the packaging says (for once) a CAKE, but the size and packaging AND eventual useage parameters DOES qualify it to be displayed in the BISCUIT Isle of your local store.

Indeed, my personal reserve of Jaffa cakes live right next to my Dark Chocolate hobnob biscuits in the drawer.

  • That was just a terrible joke.

I'd say it's a cake. I've always liked them though thinking about it I haven't had one for years. Interesting point though, texture of some foods can be really off putting can't they.

  • How can it be neither. Not a fan tbh think it’s sensory issue or something.

  • Neither! They are in fact delicious Yum
