Been listening to The Travelling Wilburys today, they were 5 male musicians who formed a group, non needed fame or fortune. There wasn’t the normal in-house fighting as none had anything to prove. They were the cream of the crop.
The original group was 5 members, it got me thinking as to a female Willburys, Who would sit at the top table?
My group would start with….
If a backing group was allowed then
I could add many more, what would your female Wilburys be? No particular genre, any style of music that would become the ultimate female band of music goddesses.
I gave this much thought last time and couldn't decide because I think you'd need a balance. However if I just dive in and think of it as a "supergroup" then Bobby Gentry, Julia Driscoll, Alison Moyet, PP Arnold, Thelma Houston. But I think that might be too much diva.
Edit: I need to reconsider. You can't have a group of all lead singers!
I wish I had grown up in the Seventies.
I would pick
Kate Pierson of the B52s
Just seen this, it’s a massive lineup.
I did think about Joan Jett, she was on the Radio recently, I couldn’t remember the name of her band, I asked my wife to look at the DAB radio, she was busy and snapped back, “ I think it’s the blackheads,!
I like Elton John. Maybe he could be in and Gary is my backup in case someone's ill
Roy said:We have a lovely Irish gentleman who comes into our village pub, one day he got some photos out of him with Elvis, they we’re having dinner and in other photos just together, in his very soft voice he just said that he worked with Elvis in Vegas for quite a while. I was just blown away, to him it was very normal.
Fascinating!
Imagine working with someone like Elvis and it's normal every day life.
Good choices.
I liked Meg White on the drums, she brought so much to the White Stripes.
Great thread!
I think mine would be:
I could probably do an all-heavy-metal one as well to be honest!
I like your male line-up, personally I would put a young Elton in Gary’s seat.

Aretha Franklin
Diana Ross
Dionne Warwick
Joan Armatrading
Tina Turner
Annie Lennox was really good in Eurythmics and in her own right as a solo artist.
For a while I was obsessed with her song Walking On Broken Glass and listening to it on a daily basis.
I love the Travelling Wilburys
I initially heard Tom Petty and became a fan of his and then couldn't believe he was in another group. I wish they had done more, poor Roy. End of the Line is my favourite song they did.
For my all girl group I think it has to be
And if I'm allowed.....
My male group would be
Did think about Yoko Ono, personally, Room 101.
Saw ‘Beaches’ recently, Bette Midler, wow,. Another candidate for the group.
I do think the reason why I liked 'I Want To Be Free' was precisely due to the lyrics, "I don't want to go to school".
Thank you for mentioning Hazel O'Connor. She's another blast from my past.
‘I Want To Be Free’ is an autistic shoutout, it was basically nobody understands, need to be heard. I don’t want to go to school, don’t want to be a fool, I want to be free. Another person I really liked was Hazel O’Connor, Breaking Glass.
My dad was a fan of Suzi's stuff, and also Toyah's. I grew up listening to a lot of the music he liked, and I guess it rubbed off on me.
The only songs of Suzi's that are lodged in my memory are 'Devil Gate Drive' and 'Can the Can'. As for Toyah, 'I Want To Be Free' has always been a favourite, along with 'It's A Mystery'.
Very good, I did think about Suzi, I love, ‘ If you can’t give me love’. First saw her doing a cameo on ‘Happy Days” The Fonz!
I have seen Texas as a warm up band, they stole the night, and rightly so.
Loved Toyah in Quadrophenia, Monkey.
I think my fantasy female Travelling Wilbury's group would consist of (in no particular order):
1. Kate Bush
2. Annie Lennox
3. Toyah Wilcox
4. Suzi Quattro
5. Heather Small (M People)
Backing singers (if allowed):
1. Sharleen Spiteri (Texas)
2. Cerys Matthews (Catatonia)
Annie is brilliant, have a look at YouTube, Annie does a duet at home with her daughter Lola. There must be an Angel. Lola is good, mum still has a vocal range that makes my ears bleed!
