Heavy metal

Hi all,

Just wanted to mention that if anyone is looking for a solitary feelgood hobby then I can highly recommend metal detecting. I bought a metal detector this week and this morning at 06:00 went down to the beach where I live to give it a go. There was nobody about at all at that time so I had the beach, the sunrise, the wildlife, and the peace and quiet all to myself which felt amazing. As far as finding treasure goes...well...let's put it this way, if beer bottle caps were valuable I'd be retiring this week. Can't win them all.

  • Are you keeping the stuff you find or just getting rid if it's nothing special?

I have visions of a basket made of bottle caps that you use to hold your new bottle caps.

I also hope we don't read about you being arrested for trying to sell your Saxon hoard.

  • Hi Tris. Definitely no bottle cap basket on the horizon. I've literally just started and I want to do things by the book, but I was approached this morning just as I was about to pack up by a guy who was obviously a regular and he confessed that he has found many Roman coins which he hasn't reported to a finds liaison officer. I get the feeling there are quite a few detectorists that don't bother because it's a bit of a faff. I believe the in term is nighthawks. If I am lucky enough to find anything valuable I will be reporting it and sharing any 'rewards' with the land owner.
