Hi all,
Just wanted to mention that if anyone is looking for a solitary feelgood hobby then I can highly recommend metal detecting. I bought a metal detector this week and this morning at 06:00 went down to the beach where I live to give it a go. There was nobody about at all at that time so I had the beach, the sunrise, the wildlife, and the peace and quiet all to myself which felt amazing. As far as finding treasure goes...well...let's put it this way, if beer bottle caps were valuable I'd be retiring this week. Can't win them all.
I lived in Dorset for 10 years and Lyme Regis was one of my regular places to visit. Something very satisfying about finding a fossil isn't there. My favourites were the pyritised ammonites, but my best find was a set of 7 Ichthyosaur tail vertebrae that had fused together. One of the local fossil shops identified it for me. I was a bit strapped for cash at the time and sold it for about £20 on eBay but wish I'd kept it now. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the number of people that swarm onto the beach at low tide hunting for fossils. I tended to go in the winter months and as early in the morning as the winter sunrise and tide patterns would permit to avoid the crowds.
Sounds an exciting hobby. I've not done metal detection before but I did used to go to the beaches to find fossils and sea things. I used to love going to Lyme Regis for that reason.
Hi Tris. Definitely no bottle cap basket on the horizon. I've literally just started and I want to do things by the book, but I was approached this morning just as I was about to pack up by a guy who was obviously a regular and he confessed that he has found many Roman coins which he hasn't reported to a finds liaison officer. I get the feeling there are quite a few detectorists that don't bother because it's a bit of a faff. I believe the in term is nighthawks. If I am lucky enough to find anything valuable I will be reporting it and sharing any 'rewards' with the land owner.
Are you keeping the stuff you find or just getting rid if it's nothing special?
I have visions of a basket made of bottle caps that you use to hold your new bottle caps.
I also hope we don't read about you being arrested for trying to sell your Saxon hoard.
What?
Very comical.Like i said, if i was Female you would't talk like that.
Oh, right. Better sign yourself up for a slot at next year's Edinburgh fringe festival then.
Well i'm laughing.I must have met the prerequiste terms and conditions.
The prerequisite of humour is that it's funny.
I was just playing dude.I have a silly sense of humour. No offence.
I bet if I'd stayed online a bit longer I'd have answered. Nothing whatsoever to do with gender.
I have social anxiety too, hence going out at 06:00 when nobody is about. As soon as it starts to get 'peopley' I'm out of there. I started a bit lower with a £299 Minelab detector just in case I didn't take to it. Got a permission on private land coming up so I'll soon have acres of solitude to enjoy.
I bet if i was Female you would have answered.
Hi Twitch.I bought a Nokta Anfibio 4 years ago for £850.Still stuck in cupboard and never used due to social anxiety going out.Expensive waste of money.
