Really Struggling

Hi,

I've come here to ask a little advice. I wanted to find a phone number where I could speak to someone, but there doesn't seem to be any to help autistic adults. I did not really want to come online, but there seems no other option, short of going to my GP, but I've lost faith in them at the moment.

I believe I am ASD. My son was diagnosed about 6 years ago. I went to the parents information course (I knew quite a bit about it already), but there were certainly aspects discussed that I recognised. I'm not good at social cue's, have trouble with eye contact, don't know how to deal with my strong emotions, and stuff like that.  When I get worried/anxious/upset I have to fiddle with something.  I have a high IQ (regularly get to the final on the 1% club when I play along at home, and sometimes even get the 1% question), so might be considered High Functioning. I am 50 and have managed to get through life. It's had it's ups and downs and often seems a struggle. I divorced from a 20 year marriage 6 years ago (and that was messy and traumatic!), but I have since found a new partner. I hardly see my children (although the eldest has just graduated, so not so surprised, but my youngest is still in secondary school, but the court order visitation fell apart when my ex-wife moved him away). I also have several phobias, which I know is more common in autism.

I've explained that part of my past as right now I feel like I am falling apart. I've been dealing with that trauma of divorce and children. My father now has Alzheimers and is getting worse, his doctors don't seem to properly acknowledge the mini-strokes he's having which is making his dementia worse. My mother is struggling to cope with it as well. They live about 150 miles away!  My work is easy, but that's the problem, there is too little of it at the moment, and my brain is going to mush. the pay rises virtually non-existant and the cost of living is really biting as i'm in rented with large debts (due to divorce!).  So life isn't the easiest right now.  But at the moment, something goes slightly wrong, I lose it. I go into a meltdown, a gibbering wreck on the floor. My partner is struggling with it, and does not really understand austism or meltdowns, she thinks I'm just acting like a 6 year old and should pull myself together. She also doesn't like me fiddling nor that I can't make eye contact when we have serious post-meltdown conversations.

I'm also really struggling with the modern world, and I think it's this that is making me live on a high anxiety level (like a 3 or 4 on the 5 point scale) such that it doesn't take much to push me over.  I can't stand everything being online. Apps are driving me mad, and I'm all for throwing away my smartphone!!  Every time I go into the bank they're asking me if I do online banking, and it is becoming a trigger for me. The supermarket checkouts all going to self service also makes me angry, and I'll queue up for ages just to see the one person working the normal checkout in the normal way.  I don't know, but I',m feeling that these things are my autism problems, things I just can't do. So as you can see I would have much rather pick up the phone.

I'm asking what I should do. Should I go and ask for an autism diagnoses, would it help? am I just clutching at this, and maybe I'm just simply close to a breakdown? Are there any organisations I can turn to for help / counseling / whatever that isn't related to NHS and GP (don't go there, the thing is falling apart, and my partner works in the hospitals!). There is so much in my head, it feels like it's going to explode, and one day that explosion may have very bad consequences and I want to avoid that!!

Sorry for such a long message, and sorry to drop in like this. I just don't know what else to do.

Any help anyone could provide would be really really appreciated.

  • Modern life is hard but more so if your brain is wired differently. These days there's too much information and too much expectation and too much for the senses.  You could consider seeing a neurodivergent therapist. It may be possible that you could explore the things you find difficult without actually having a diagnosis. Also look into autistic burnout. This is something I have struggled to get my head around but operating on a higher baseline of anxiety for so long can mean when the muck hits the fan, there's less in the tank for coping. Keiran Rose has a good video on youtube about burnout.

    P.S. myself and a few others here share your sentiments about certain aspects of technology.

  • It can be high and not know it, as you never really know the limitations of you capacity, until you reach capacity.. If your IQ is as high as you believe, you may have quite the battery, and thus have a lot of wiggle room..

  • Either way you should seek to get in line, 3 years comes in a flash, for long-suffered.. you could also get a private screening..

  • Thanks. My parents are getting some help, but i think my mother needs more. it's also the fight with their GP and hospital to get them to properly recognise things that is the struggle.

  • don't get me wrong, i'm a high tech guy. I build my own computers, I work in simulation, but when it comes to my personal information I don't like that flying around the internet where anyone can pick it up. I don't trust it. Maybe it's because of what I know, maybe it's my age, maybe it's the autism, maybe a mixture of all of it. But what I struggle with is being forced to do stuff online and in apps. I don't want to be part of it, and i've got a personal block on it. It's like a food I dislike and can't stomach. I can do a little of it, but too much and I'm going to gag!

  • Thanks. I don't feel it is that high. I feel more boderline than that! but were I to go to my GP, from what I can gather the lead time for diagnosis is 2 or 3 years!! I could do with some help before then!

  • Go to your GP and ask for a referral to a diagnostician..

  • Yeah man, with an AQ that high, it is worth getting a screening for sure..

    You’ve done pretty good, in a neurotypical world, with an AQ that high, you must be a pretty smart guy to have coped for this long, sorry for your troubles man. I think a screening and diagnosis would do you alot of good..

  • Knowing if you are autistic and getting a formal diagnosis can be a relief. Although i am not formally diagnosed yet, i have accepeted that i am. I understand myself better, go easier on myself, accept my struggles instead of battling with them. This helps to prevent melt downs. To recognise when its time to rest. You have a lot going on, so you likely feeling overwhelmed. Can you contact the social services for an assessment and support for your parents? If your in a melt down, your in a melt down, go easy on yourself. Acceptance and being able to be your true self is a great thing x

  • Hi so I am around your age and was diagnosed just recently. For me it was well worth it. Among other things it validated why I was feeling overwhelmed by things that others handled easily. You can be both autistic and 'close to a breakdown' at the same time, and for me that was the case and my overwhelm was the sign that I needed to get some professional help, not only diagnosis, but therapy, and make major life changes. Easier said than done I know. As for specific recommends I am in the US, sorry. 

    Spending time with people who take lack of eye contact and fidgeting personally and who view autistic meltdown as childishness will make you feel pretty lousy about yourself.

    Overwhelm just kind of makes everything feel like too much. Like you couldn't possibly take in one more bit of information or make one more personal adjustment to suit everyone else. So you just feel resentful instead of helped when someone asks for the zillionth time about online banking. It's funny because I hate the opposite things you do. I hate hate hate hate phones and love the internet. Although I'm with you on the self checkout- not a fan. I think though when we are not in active overwhelm it is helpful for us to try to engage with these unfamiliar systems and learn them because once they cease to be unfamiliar we see all they can do for us. Personally I use online banking and a whole host of other online tools to reduce effort and time spent and for me this is an important part of caring for myself as a person with a disability. I feel really helped by these tools- unlike you I was never able to stay on top of things when I had to send physical mail and bank in person.

  • Could you point me in the direction of good ones. There is so much rubbish on the internet these days, it's beginning to be difficult to tell what is good and sensible science and what is someone just having fun making stuff up! thanks

  • It’s different strokes for different folks where mental health services are concerned.. there are many different types to choose from: Counselling (for the multitude of issues that people develop), specialist therapy, psychotherapy, CBT, medication, mindfulness, anger management, training, study, support .. but I wouldn’t discount a service based on the reviews of others it’s better to see for yourself..

  • Try doing an Autism Quotient test and an Empathy Quotient test on the internet, if the AQ is over 28/50 you should seek a screening for autism, I’d the EQ is middling then it will explain how well you mask your autistic traits.. and go from there..
