Memories

Recently got diagnosed after 27 long years! Does anyone else ever feel like they struggle to remember things short term but can recall basically useless info from god knows how long ago purely because it was interesting at one point? does that make sense and how do people cope with new information and being able to be better at remembering or retaining? Thanks

  • For sure.

I remember so much, from the past, but forget recent happenings.

Time-planning would be a good idea.

  • Congratulations on the diagnosis! I find it difficult to retain information especially when reading I can't remember characters names, places and sometimes the plot. And useless with people's names in real life! Bad memory is common for people like us - I expect it's where our brains work so hard to process everything that's going on around us!

  • Hi.

Yes, this is true of me too.

I have very early memories, going back to being a baby and can remember vividly and in detail conversations and events during the whole of my life.

However, if I'm trying to remember what I did the day before I struggle!

I'm 61 now so the death of my brain cells doesn't help.

Anyway, the 'aide memoire' I've used all my life is writing things down.

    At home and at work.

    I'd be listless without lists.

My house moto is: 'if it's not on the list, it doesn't exist'.

    Oh yes.

If something doesn't interest me there is little chance it will stay in my memory for long. This used to annoy my ex wife terribly, but after the diagnosis it made more sense.

If it is important, write it down or take a photo on your phone for anything complex - that has saved me on many occasions.

  • I have never been good at retaining information. To remember things I have to do them over and over again until I remember the process. This is probably why Maths was the school subject I got the best grades in.

As for remembering information I have to write things down if important. That works if I remember where I wrote it.
