Is there anyone here with experience of Irlen’s Syndrome?

I have autism, dyspraxia likely ADHD and visual processing issues etc and have been advised by an Educational professional and also an optometrist that I may have Irlen’s syndrome.

Does anyone have any experience of this condition and why is help for it not available on the NHS - from my google searches there are two NHS centres that deal with it, but nothing within striking distance of myself.

  • Yup! I am dyslexic and have Irlen's. I was diagnosed at the institute of Optimetry in 2005 and now have a great local optician who can prescribe.

Good news is Irlen's can be near fixed or fixed with tinted specs. Bad new is not available on the NHS. If you work you might be able to persaude your OH to pay for it mine do. Access to work might help you there.

If claiming PIP they might add a couple of points for that.

  • i have an issue with artificial lights ... the whole irlen thing sounds sketchy to me, but i am looking at getting assessed.

  • There are special eye clinics, such as the University of Caledonia eye clinic who specialise in this.

You can search for your nearest eye clinic that offer that.

You can find out lots about it on the internet.

It is sadly not available on the NHS.

If you think you have it, it is worth going to see about.

Glasses with a coloured tint is made for your specifics.

However, if you are not sure if you have it , you can buy a packet of a variety of coloured overlays to use when reading and see if one or a few colours makes an improvement for you, if so then you should really go to get the glasses.

I did it about 4 years or so ago, it was not overly expensive, but I do think that it should be offered on NHS.

    I hope that helps

  • I may be wrong, but I think proof of this condition and relevant research is dubious. I'm pretty sure I have it, but never managed to find any help with it
