assesment tomorrow

Hi all. My assesment is tomorrow.
Any tips etc about what to expect? I know that may defeat the purpose of the assessment somewhat, but I'm so anxious, just wondering what to expect, and what they do? I will be going on my own as I've no one to come along, who is willing to speak to the assessors

Simon

  • I’d provided a lot of info prior to going in my letter to my gp ( I broke it down for each heading in the dsm v) so the session lasted around 90 minutes, with him asking questions to clarify a few points. and at the end he diagnosed me with autism.
slightly funny thing happened. He was asking over food sensitivities. There’s a certain breakfast cereal I have issues with (hard to even think about it and type the name but it begins with w) and I almost vomited when trying to talk about it so did prove my point about it

  • It's fine to be anxious, the assessor I had was friendly and understanding. They'll ask you questions involving multiple different aspects of your life (social life, how you are day to day, childhood and any difficulties you are experiencing) to get an understanding of you and usually will give feedback and discuss your answers to the questions they ask. Be honest, they're here to help you.

  • Thanks I’ve got to get the train there which I’m nervous about. I was offered a virtual appointment but I have a very poor internet connection so it wouldn’t really be stable enough

  • My assessment for ASD was an in depth conversation about who I am and how I manage each day. We discussed what I do, how I cope, and how it all makes me feel. The assessor asked a lot of questions, but they were really friendly and helpful. A lot of the questions seemed repetitive but I guess that was because he wanted a clearer picture of what was going on in my life.

As for your anxiety - I was extremely anxious too. I had a meeting over ZOOM and I was alone for it too, but it was a really good opportunity to be honest without feeling judged.

I really hope everything goes okay for you, just be you!
