medication

What is the names of the prescribed medication for adult ADHD and Autism. I wont to self medicate i'm unable to cope any more. I have to wait another year and a half before i can go for the assessment. It's far too long to wait. My doctor isn't allowed to medicate me she has to get the diagnosis first and the psychiatrist who diagnoses me is only the one that can prescribe medication if i need it. I'm sure its the same for all of you too.

  • Try it with lion's mane. it was like a turbo boost for me.

  • Look into Lion's Mane. It's a natural supplememnt. It's not specifically for the things you say but I have read they have helped some people. It certainly helps me feel more productive and less anxious and helps me think more clearly. I think there's a reason prescribed medicines are prescribed.

  • Groovy.  I think I will benefit from the drugs too.....but my research made it very clear that a VERY delicate balance is required if bad effects are to be avoided AND if they are to deliver the useful effects we need.

  • thank you for serious advice. I never knew this bad side to them. All i was focused on was getting these drugs take them and i will be alright after that. I just so much need to escape out of my head. I thought this would be the right escape i needed. Obviously it's not. Thank you again you've saved from another hard lesson.

  • Wow. That's good. My doctor tried that for me she told me they had waiting lists as long as the NHS one. I'm from North Yorkshire. You must be living out side North Yorkshire.

  • Hi as your GP about NHS-right to choose. I have been on the waiting list for 3 years and now nagged my doctor to use this. They will pair you with a private company but on the NHS. Now been told a wait of 4-6 months rather than 1 year plus. Good luck ,Rob.

  • Hello NAS 84712, I am Number.

I have done a lot of research on these drugs (they only [sometimes] work on ADHD and ADD - nothing "works" on autism.)

I am the type of person who is not afraid to try things for myself......BUT......with these particular drugs, it is a REALLY, REALLY BAD IDEA to try and use them yourself without having a lot of support and monitoring.

These drugs ONLY WORK if they are given in the right way, at the right time, in the right dose.......and these are not things you can do for yourself.

There are LOTS of examples of people committing suicide (almost certainly when they didn't mean to) because they had tried to experiment with these drugs on their own.

I am sorry that you are feeling so bad at the moment, but please trust me, experimenting with ADHD drugs on your own is a REALLY, REALLY BAD IDEA.

I am sorry that I don't have a good answer for you on what you SHOULD do now - but I do know that you SHOULD NOT do these drugs by yourself.

I hope things get better for you....Good luck.

  • Whilst I have no knowledge of ADHD, I gather there are some that are sometimes prescribed to help with concentration.

There are no medications for autism, because it isn't an illness.  All autism and ADHD mean is that your brain is structured differently to most people and you think in a different way.

However, it could be that you develop a mental health condition because of the difficulties in living as an autistic person or ADHDer in a world not designed for us.  The only thing that a psychiatrist would prescribe for is if you have such a mental health problem.

I really wouldn't advise self-medicating because some medications for mental health issues can do you a lot of damage if you don't actually need them or you end up taking something for a condition you don't have instead of the one you might have.

If you are depressed or anxious, your GP can diagnose those conditions and prescribe anti-depressants, but if it is anything like psychosis only a psychiatrist can prescribe.  I understand where your GP is coming from.  He/she needs to know for sure whether you are autistic or not, whether you are ADHD or not and whether you have a mental health condition beyond everyday depression or anxiety or not.

You might be able to get some other support in the meantime though if you talk to your GP.  Different regions might be different, but in our areas MIND CASS run short courses for people who are waiting for an assessment or have just been diagnosed.  The also offer advice and guidance on all sorts of topics and run an informal peer support network for autistic people.  Your GP might also be able to refer you for some counselling in the meantime, but if so, do make clear that you are waiting for an assessment as the therapist will need to make adjustments to the approach.

I would go see your GP again to see what he/she can do while you wait.

  • Cannabis I believe has helped me mitigate the worst of the symptoms over the years...

But it has it's own set of drawbacks. IT does definitely curbs the ADHD doing things without thinking it thorough tendency.
