About co-morbidites of neurodevelopmental disorders

Having co-morbidity of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Severe, Specific Learning Disorder and having trouble with adaptive-functioning looks similar to Intellectual Disability.

  • To qualify as specific learning disorder your impairment would have to be in one fairly narrow area, eg dyslexia. If your impairment was sevear and across a wide range of cognitive skills it probably would be ID not SpLD.

I don’t know how you define adaptive functioning. I’m assuming it’s similar to executive functioning? But as an autistic person with, what I was told was, sevear dyslexia, I think very few would mistake me for someone with ID.

  • I failed most academics throughout school years, had communication delays and have trouble with adaptive-functioning, e.g mostly problems with being independent mostly.

  • Well I don’t really think I’ve come across the term adaptive function before but they way you describe it it sound like life skills, cooking and cleaning etc. ID and autism would both effect how you learn these things.

ID might make you unable to learn where as autism would effect how you learn. Take cooking. Many people learn to cook by observing their parents. My cooking is more like chemistry class. Precise measurements, these experimental protocols called recipes. I learnt the cooking I know from books.

I think that’s common with autism, things most people pick up have to be actively learnt in an almost academic way.

I suppose a dim person observing poor academic performance and difficulty with life skills could mistake it for ID. I’d expect a professional psychiatrist to know better. Although I often think medical professionals should know better than they do.

particularly with communication issues poor academic performance can be more a function of the communication baria than the intelligence of the student. Once a teacher finds a way to ‘speak their language’ and resolves to put the effort in to communicate on the students terms progress often improves markedly
