Do you find that you are always eager to please people?

I spent about £350 on presents for my parents the Christmas just gone and they probably spent about £70 on me and this has happened countless times. Can you relate to this?  Is it common for autistic people to go over the top in order to please people?

  • I can be like that at Christmas. I feel that it's my responsibility to make sure everyone has the best Christmas. I also do things for people I don't much like, because they're not very nice. It can be hard to say no, even when you suspect they are taking advantage.

  • I've always put others first ahead if myself, all my life. And now since i've realised i'm autistic, i've begun to realise so many people have been laughing at me, knowing that i was a fool. Just one example, although i could go on. I have a nephew who is a millionaire, not just your average millionaire, hes mega, in the Sunday Times rich list.  One Christmas i asked him for a bike, it wasn't a flash one, i thought he can easily afford it. Christmas morning comes and he gives me a packet of garden seeds, i was sure he was joking and my bike was out in his car,  but it wasn't. Over the years i'd given him and his family thousands. Not now, even the most stupid of us learn eventually.

  • I have often found that those with less tend to give more.

Do you find that you have a need to be helpful and useful? I do.

I get laughed at at work, and I try my best to not be myself. Perhaps it's my eagerness to help that they find amusing. Or it could just be me in general
