What was the last book you read?

For those of you who are into reading, what was the last book you read and/or the book you are currently reading?

The last book I read was Radio Silence by Alice Oseman and the book I'm currently reading is The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin. Two books out of my comfort zone because they are very different to what I usually read but I enjoyed/am enjoying both. I'm also reading Death Note (manga) at the moment, which is a more usual genre for me. I bought the black editions of the series recently and they look so beautiful on my bookshelves Heart eyes

  • The show disappointed me so much (and disappointed so many others judging by the reactions to the final season). I definitely don't consider the show to be the true ending as I just can't believe that George RR Martin would have written any of that into his books.

So, in my mind, the series is forever stuck at the fifth book, and the show after season 4 simply doesn't exist Laughing

Don't worry about derailing! I like when threads take on a life of their own Blush My top three favourite characters are Sansa, Jaime, and Theon. I have a soft spot for Theon in particular - I know many people dislike him and it's understandable, but I am just in awe of how expertly written his characterisation and story arc are.

  • I have just finished reading a Christmas present book bought my NT son.
“The communist Manifesto” written by Karl Marx.
    it was the English translation.

  • I get what you’re saying here.

I think in some ways, with the tv show being so popular, it almost became accepted that the story was going to be portrayed in that medium from that moment in time. But there didn’t seem to be much understanding in the fact that the books were so different to what was shown on screen. They joy of the books, for me at least, was just how much complexity there was to so many of the characters and storylines. I much admit though, my working knowledge of these complexities has become foggy at best due to the time away from the series!

Without wanting to derail your thread away from your intended question, as I am aware that I may be doing that, may I ask who your favourite character was?

  • Yeah, that's exactly the reason why my obsession with ASOIAF cooled off. Back in the early to mid 2010's it was my main special interest, I spent so much time online discussing theories and everything. But it's been so long since the fifth book came out... at this point I've just accepted that I may never know how my favourite character's stories end Disappointed relieved

  • Oh really? So far, it’s excellent! I have just started the second, but have the next three saved in my eBay basket ready to go (an indication of how much I’m enjoying it).

My comfort read as a teen was Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle. Just pure fantasy adventure at a time when my love for this genre was at its peak. I really liked those books, but I imagine some of the enjoyment if I were to read them again would come from the nostalgia.

  • So far I’m really enjoying it. I would certainly recommend it at this point in my journey. Like you, I really enjoyed A Song of Ice & Fire, but the series stopped for a while and I think I’ve sort of moved away during the lengthy break, which doesn’t seem to have an end in sight. I did pick up the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan after though and that was excellent! I would love to forget the story and read those for the first time again.

  • Oh, that was my comfort series when i was a teen! I still occasionally re-read it, though I don't own it all, I might get the missing ones on kindle next time I feel the urge.

  • I just looked that series up and it looks really good! I haven't read fantasy in ages. I used to be a big fantasy reader and in particular I was obsessed with A Song of Ice & Fire by George RR Martin but I've fallen out of the habit of reading fantasy nowadays. I should add some to my to-read list Thinking

  • I have not long finished The Pawn of Prophesy by David Eddings. It is the first book in a series called The Belgariad and I have just started the second; Queen of Sorcery. The series so far has been fantastic. I think I’m loving it so much due to the fact that I haven’t read fiction in years. I love fantasy and I’m finally making time for myself to enjoy it again. But also, it is really good, so I’m enjoying it for that reason too.
