Stimming

Hi, I am an Early Years Teacher and we have a 4 year old who has recently been diagnosed with Autism. The child is only just beginning to engage in activites. My question is, he will come over to the activity stay for a few seconds and will then run of, jumping, talking to self and use lots of body movement. The child then comes back and repeats, sometimes staying longer. The child does this with lunch as well. They will stay eating for, anything between 3 minuites to 10 mins and then get up and run, jump, lay down, roll around before coming back for a few more minutes. Is this stimming?

  • It does sound like stimming, the child is engaging in as much of an activity as they can stand, stimming is often a bit like a pressure relief valve, while stimming it’s rhythmic and lets the brain process what they have seen or eaten,  both of these activities are sensory and can become too overwhelming. Some also people stim when happy or sad. There is nothing to worry about, as long as the child is safe , let them stim it’s quite normal. Not every autistic person stims, we are all different, for me it’s self-soothing.

  • Thank you, I did think this but just wanted to make sure. Yes I think it is also self-soothing for the child as well.
