Struggling to reflect on a university module - due to challenges communicating emotions any ideas ?

Hi All,

Happy new year (first post of 2023 for me)

I am having some issues of being reflective of myself and emotions ( I have awareness of these but don't really communicate them well). On my university course we have to write a module reflective essay. I am really struggling as it's asking me to reflect on my feelings and emotions. I understand what I am meant to write about but am unsure how I tie atcitys and emotions together.

I was thinking of including a paragraph about the challenges of completing the essay as struggle with being reflective and communicating emotions as a person with autism. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or ideas on this topic ?

Many Thanks

  • I'd research Alexithymia and write a 'Reflective Piece' on this. The topic is not inclusive.

To be able to reflect on our Emotions or even the Self can be an act of maturity and something which one is properly taught. If you've never been taught specifically how to reflect on your 'feelings' then how can you engage with the act? What are you even looking for?

Being capable of Reflection itself might not be a problem. Many things in science can go horribly wrong if we project our feelings into them or we don't try to simply allow them to exist without projection.

Jung talks about the difference between the Thinking Type and Feeling Type in Volume 6 of his collected works. If we are the Thinking type, we may be more conscious of our thoughts, where as the feeling type might not connect with the immediacy of ideas and abstraction, but the consequence of how those things in the subconscious 'make them feel'.

Perhaps a little research into these will help the teacher recognise the need to expand an assignment like this so it can include all human beings and not just some :)

  • Seek out advice or input from a peer or mentor. Or even a family member.

Bouncing anything stuck in your head off another person reflects it back slightly differently. Ive found this an excellent way to unpick most stuck moments ThumbsupGood luck
