Masking and Burnout (Video)

Yes, it's much better to frame it like that because it's acutally a very human thing.  I think we often do it to the nth degree though, and I can relate very strongly to the bit where he talks about a kind of "schism" and difficulty differentiating between the authentic self and the mask.  I think I've been masking since reception class, if not before, so this all comes as a major cause for reflection as I approach 60.  Whose life have I been leading, after all?

Yes, it is sobering indeed.  I'm glad he's getting his message out though and am looking forward to his book coming out. 

I like that he recognises all people mask, not just us, because otherwise being singled out like that is very stigmatising.

Thank you for sharing that link Jenny Butterfly. I watched the video earlier this morning. Like you, it also touched a few nerves and I found it rather sobering in places.

Yes I understand what you mean, unfortunately we didn’t have access to the autistic advocates we do today. 

More recently though, we are referenced because we are experts on our own autistic experience.

Yes, I really wish I'd had access to resources like this long ago.  It might have helped to prevent a LOT of trauma for me and mine and videos like this deserve a much wider audience. 

I feel the same, validated, and wishing I'd seen this and had it at my side since like all my life.

Thank you for posting. I would highly recommend that everyone watch this and share it. It is one of the best talks on masking and burnout that I have seen.

It has made me feel validated  However I too wish I had known all this much earlier in my life. So much unnecessary trauma
