I want to change my meds

My GP has me on setraline and I've been taking it for 2 months. My GP is on holiday and is back at the end of August. I don't want to speak to another doctor. He gave me setraline due to my anxiety, but I've been having suicidal thoughts at night. I've found myself Googling 'painless suicide'.

What medication can I suggest to my GP that will make me feel good? I've read that adderall makes you feel ok. I'm pretty sure I have ADHD as I can't concentrate.

  • The sertraline could be causing the suicidal thoughts. They are one of the SSRI antidepressants which are known to do that in some patients. I think autistic individuals are more likely to experience non standard responses, as they have not been tested on autistic brains.

Years ago I was prescribed Citalopram (another SSRI) for anxiety and I started having suicidal thoughts after I had been taking them a couple of months. After a further few weeks these thoughts were constant, persistent and intrusive. I wouldn't risk leaving it until the end of August and would stop taking them straight away.

As stated above they are unlikely to help the anxiety anyway. In my case they made it worse and nothing would persuade me to start taking them again.

  • Thanks for the post ChloeMod,

I would never hurt myself. They were just stupid thoughts. How can I send you a private message?

  • Thank you. I'm very confused this mornng, but I'll read the post you linked later when my brain fog goes away.

This video is very interesting. I can only take in 5 minutes at a time, but it's enlightening.

  • Not being able to concentrate can be a variety of issues. The best Way to asses ADHD pre-dx is to ask if you’re impulsive. If you like spontaneity.

I’ve posted about this before :

From what I know and have read and unless you're mis-diagnosed, anti-depressants most likely won't help. I started a thread a little while ago on why this is: https://community.autism.org.uk/f/health-and-wellbeing/26018/anxiety-stress-vs-depression

Since then I've found a new medical paper which basically proves the Autistic brain, with it's higher percent of Gamma Waves (higher oscillations of brain waves responsible for making connexions, a flow-state / eureka state) will induce physical anxiety far more often than non-autistic peers. A thought is these oscillations can become out of control. But it accounts for full-brain reasoning.

Personally, I've experienced I need to shut anxiety down with a medical aid. I use it on a rare occasion. so while they stop the out of control beach all in my head, they don’t problem solve. It important to fix youre environment as best you can and resolve issues to any degree which might be causing stress.

  • An anti-depressant won’t fix anxiety. I would stop taking that.
