Can anyone recommend a good therapist?

Hi,

I've been quiet on this forum for a while, but I got an autism diagnosis last month.  Thanks so much to everyone who supported me during the process of seeking a diagnosis.  I really appreciate it very much.

I'm looking for a therapist to help me overcome some friendship/relationship problems and to talk a bit about my diagnosis, as I've been in a difficult place since then.  There are lots of therapists out there and it's really difficult to know who to choose.  I thought I would ask for some personal recommendations.  Have any of you been to see a therapist who's really helped you, who has a good understanding of autism?  I'd be really grateful for any suggestions, either here or by private message.

Many thanks

  • Hello, take as much as you need to process your new autistic identification. I would recommend you contact an autistic therapist, you won’t need to explain your neurology then. You should feel understood.

You say you want to talk about your diagnosis it could therefore be really useful to share your thoughts and experiences with another autistic person.

     I hope this helps.

  • Thanks very much!  It's strange because I was really hoping for a diagnosis for such a long time, but now that I have it, I'm feeling really bad about myself, thinking about all the things I get wrong and all the things I have trouble with.

  • You are very welcome. Everything you are feeling is perfectly valid, the process of autistic identification is life changing and takes time to adjust to. In time, hopefully these feelings will pass and you will recognise that you are an amazing autistic person. This video may help you understand how you are feeling with more clarity:

‘I'm feeling really bad about myself, thinking about all the things I get wrong and all the things I have trouble with.’

This must be really difficult for you, when you are ready you may want to engage with the autistic community more to help you understand your own autistic profile. We all have strengths and weaknesses, but the more you change your environment to suit your autistic neurology the better you will feel.

Do you want help with the things you find difficult? I would be happy to offer suggestions or share similar experiences.
