Feeling like a savant and worries of delusion of grandeur

I feel like a savant based on my restricted interests, is this normal? I don't mean to sound like I have delusion of grandeur, but that is this core symptom of ASD that I experience.

I am sorry for being worried that I have delusion of grandeur, some people will think how insane I am if I tell them that I am ten times more intelligent than them.

That is why it is very hard to tell the difference between restricted interests and Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

I am sorry that I said that, but some symptoms of ASD looks very similar to NPD by observation.

  • Might I suggest to pick up a quick book on symbolic Logic at the Library? They're sometimes in the Reference Sections. This should help sort some of what you might be trying to explain here :)

  • Arghhhh bloody Spock.... Like being referred to as 'like Sheldon, or Rain man" these utter simplifications give people an idea of what they are dealing with and switch off any opportunity to understand the different nuances between autistic people!Wink

  • Yeah I agree, there's definitely people out there who thinks faster than others. I've known a person who talks really fast, and I remember a time when my brain was just beginning to form a sentence, and they have already blurted the sentence out, and it was exactly what I was thinking. So their mind processes information really fast, enough for them to already think and say an entire sentance, before my brain could even form a sentence and chain words together..

But I have to imagine how frustrating it must be, to be surrounded by such slow talking people (like myself), and I wonder if it's as if time slowed down, and people are slurring their words. It must make conversations unbearable. And I can't imagine how much more slower they would be if they were also intoxicated and slurring their words.

I think that when people are online, they can read the information as fast or as slow as they would like, so unless they've been around you and saw how fast you are in real life, they might not understand it. But I sincerely hope that you put those Sherlock Holmes skills to good use in some field that would benefit from it.

  • I replied without any derogatory remarks and delivered something VITAL to the community yet that comment was immediately flagged by someone and deleted as abuse? Life saving insight was abuse????? That emotionally charged response was in full violation and hypocrisy of all basic tenants of our community. Full violation.

Please be consistent in your bias and delete my first comment as well, I sure won't do it for you.

  • Disagree, I KNOW I think much faster than others and come up with ideas very rapidly because my friends and family tell me so.  Most of the time I need to throttle back to fit in.  For shapes, colours and materials I'm like the recent depiction of Sherlock where I look at something and can analyse how its made and constructed in a split second.  I have to count to 10 after thinking of a solution to a problem (Or many solutions) so I don't upset the old NT's by reacting so quickly, and therefore stand out too much.  Have had to learn to use phrases like "Is it like"  "Have you considered" "Seems to me" etc because when I say THIS IS THE SOLUTION in a split second they get annoyed!

  • I'll try to explain some things. Logic is not truly a thinking style, it's only an element of abstract and concrete thoughts. What truly matters is the number of perspectives someone can hold and manipulate. Within your chosen interest you might be able to navigate that universe with incredible speed but that's just one universe and you aren't acting with intelligence. Neurotypicals might be able to focus less on one universe and are therefor detached from the deepest Logic yet there is a reason for that, they are juggling MANY universes at the same time and they live to monitor and  control the interactions between those perspectives/universes. They are creating meaning in the gap between concepts rather than finding meaning in one concept and in for that they use the most difficult and complex concept that exists, the self. That's why most neurtypicsls see what you are doing and deem you to be less than them or stupid.

The real mark of intelligence is the ability to simultaneously hold two or more ideas that conflict with each other at the same time in your mind. That is rare among everyone and lends itself to "quality of thought." Allows multidimensional accuracy aka reality. Logic is not reality, it can be bent and broken.

You are not 10 times smarter than anyone. You are not processing 10 times more than anyone. It's an illusion of the ego because in a special interest there exists a density of "meaningful" information all in one big chunk.

  • What you have sounds more like ASD, because your reasoning is drawn from pure logic, rather than from the need to put down others in order to remain better than others.

I think characters from Star Trek, like Spock or Data, would be people on the ASD spectrum, who usually use their pure logic without much emotion, and there isn't any malace in their character. It's more like they deeply analyse every situation.

But I would think that characters from the Game of Thrones, like Viserys Targaryen and Joffrey Baratheon, would show behaviors and temperments of those with NPD or at somewhere in the cluster B personalities, where they need to harm others and dominate.

But I mean, that's my observation of it, but don't just take my word for it. Draw your own conclusions too.

  • I have restricted interests in some topics related to Foransics.

  • Intelligence quotients go from around 40 to 160 in everyday life. If you believe in them, that is. Most people have an IQ in the middle of that range. Is an IQ of 110 double    that of 100? Not in my maths, though I suppose you could be twice as intelligent.

Perhaps you might do well to separate intelligence, education and information. Especially with special interests Autistic people have lots of information, and might  know 1000 times another person about something.

But what about other types of intelligence, such as social intelligence, understanding of myself, awareness of my body, and feelings , and location in time and space?
