Do I go for assessment?

Hi,

My psychiatrist a couple of years ago thought I might have autism.  I've been looking at adult assessments local to me, and I've found one who test in your own home, and have spaces in July.

Do I do it? It is expensive.

  • no one can tell you whether to do it or not. gaining a diagnosis doesn't necessarily mean you will get the support that you need. personally, I have received no support. however, the diagnosis helped me as it explained to me why i do certain things. So, what i am trying to say is that you need to work out why you are considering a diagnosis and what you want out of it

  • Thanks Alisha.  I think it would help me to know if that's why I have certain difficulties. Most of the places local to me for assessment are £1900-2000, apart from one which is online only which is about half.

  • Wow - that is a lot of money! If you are not in a hurry you could just approach your GP. I think it can take about 2 years to get an assessment. Whilst this is scandalously long if you are in no rush it might be worth considering. In truth it’s quite easy to find out oneself if your Autistic just by doing research online.
