Therapy?

(please ignore profile name, I haven't figured out how to change it on here yet (if you can at all). I have had my name officially changed to "Ren" so please refer to me as such, thank you)

Hello, I havent been on here for a while and I was just wondering if any of you know the process to get some sort of therapy/care plan set up? Do you have to go through NAS or via GP or some other way?

I basically just need help with things as my mother/carer is taking a backseat with the carer role as we have had a big falling out and I need to sort something out in regards to a care plan, and generally therapy to talk out my issues in order to better function. I'm not really sure what I need to do as my mother was the one who would organize all of my important stuff because I find it too stressful and then nothing gets done.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Yep, GP is the best place and write things down if it helps get across to the GP whats happened and what you need.

  • I think I will make a GP appointment and start from there. I didnt know if because of it being autism related, maybe I would have to go through NAS? But if it can be done through a GP then I will give that a try.

Thank you so much for your help.

  • Thank you very much, I will try to get that sorted.

  • If you are in England, to receive free therapy you will need to go via the GP and be referred to well being, however this service has an extremely long backlog and you will most likely have to wait a long time, I personally have been waiting 6 months, unfortunately but understandably they prioritize depression and suicidal tendencies over anything else. You can get therapy via many private services but these are generally rather expensive. If thats not an issue, google therapists/counsellors in your area and go from there. Mind often run low cost counselling (£20 a session) however these counsellors are still in training and are unlikely to have any experience with ASD.

In terms of a care package, I can't offer any advice or suggestions however I hope that you get the help you need.

I hope this helps even a little.

  • I would start with the GP - they might also be able to give you information about local services. They might recommend a Social Sevices assessment possibly. I’m sorry that things between you and your mother have deteriorated - that’s a shame. Good luck with everything.
