Do you work?

Do you work, or study, or just do things around the house?

I'm jobless at the moment. But I am looking for work but I failed at school and have nothing to aid me getting a job. The idea of working makes me so nervous but surviving without income looks hard, and in time I want my own family one day so I need to be able to provide.

I was looking at studying but I'm too nervous and I'm not very good at learning which I guess is why I failed school.

So at the moment I'm just doing things around the house and am trying to better myself Slight smile

  • Hi Jess, have you thought about an online course, maybe The Open University. Sometimes working with animals is very rewarding and they can’t talk!

  • Hi Roy, no I hadn't but thanks for the suggestion I will Google that and see what it involves and would be like.

I love your idea of working with animals. I love animals so much and I feel this is something I would definitely love to do!

  • I'm retired now, so don't need to worry about work. Going back to when i left school, i went working in offices and took professioal qualifications in evening classe. Although i did it for many years, there were lots of the time i didn't like it. Thinks like the office Christmas party were the worse. I felt i never fitted in, although i never realised then i'm autistic. I ended up getting made redundant, and struggled to find a job as good and well paid as i'd had. I just went to pieces at interviews. Then by chance i ended  up driving a taxi, you may think that would be worse for anyone autistic, having to talk to sa many different people, but in fact i found it better. Most passengers were going on short journeys so conversation were only very light, and working by myself i didn't have to worry about group social meetings such as Christmas. If anyone asked i'd just say, ...... this Cab is costing me a fortune to buy, i can't afford to have the time off. And people would accept that, whereas working in an oddice, you're expected to join in.

  • Hi, it's nice that you're retired now :) that sounds so relaxing and peaceful. Do you still manage to keep busy during the day? I hope you are enjoying it.

Working in an office sounds like quite a busy job, and lots of pressure at times especially with things like Christmas parties. I could never do anything like that. Way too much stress. I avoid parties at all costs can't cope with the noise and people. It must have been hard not fitting in, I was like that at school, so difficult to cope when you aren't fitting in with everyone else. And not knowing you were autistic must have added to that stress and feeling. I'm sorry you were made redundant and I think I'd be the same in interviews! They sound so stressful and daunting.

Taxi driving sounds fun :) I guess you will have got to see lots of different places as well? The talking must have been hard but at least it wasn't always for very long and also being in your own car and space must have been so lovely. A lot less stress and pressure for sure.
