Support at work?

I have found out today that I am on the waiting list for an assessment on the NHS. The wait is 18 months which is what it is but I feel like I need support at work before then. How can I go about approaching my employer without a diagnosis? Is it even a good idea to approach them without one?

  • I started a new job in November, and was also accepted onto an 18  month waitlist in December, I wasn't sure if I was going to mention it as work but there were a few times where I felt like I was acting different to others so wanted them to know why I might sometimes come across as odd or different. Personally I mentioned it casually to my manager when we were alone together by saying "I got a letter from the NHS today, I've been referred for an autism assessment but the waitlist is 18 months!" and they knew a little bit about autism so had a little chat about what makes me different and while I haven't had any formal accommodations, I know I can say no to things or if I did need something I could ask and they would know why.
If you're on good terms with your manager you could mention informally, but if not and you desperately need accommodations you could send them an email stating "it's highly likely I am autistic and my GP agrees with me, however the waitlist for formal diagnosis is long, something that could help me in the meantime is _____ (whatever you need) Slight smile

  • Hi

I havn't an official diagnosis yet, but sense I'm autistic. I've arranged to meet my employer about it. I instinctively felt the need to tell them. I feel comforted by the fact employers are by law, have to support employees regarding their wellbeing so I'm hoping I receive a positive outcome from them.

Only advise I can give is trust your instincts whether to tell them or not. X
