Autism Severity Labels and 'The Spectrum'

Unfortunately, there is a lot of misunderstanding about what is meant by the term 'spectrum'.

'Spectrum' with reference to autistic spectrum disorders is often incorrectly defined as if it were a linear concept, from one end to another; a general range from mild to severe when, in actuality; autism is characterised by an uneven profile of abilities across different domains; and often within a single domain.

One single individual with autism might have a high degree of challenges in some areas, mild in others and moderate in yet other areas.

Information lacking nuance, and misinformation; does a disservice to all!

The problem is so significant (and frequently harmful for both those labelled 'mildly autistic' or 'severely autistic'!) that the word 'spectrum' is likely to soon become obsolete with respect to autism terminology.

I am saddened by such misunderstandings as they impact the lives of many; whether it is the potential of an individual that may be missed or the challenges that another one faces overlooked.

Best wishes to you all at the National Autistic Society,
