AQ-10 form from GP

Hi, I'm 46 and have asked the GP to start the ball rolling on an assessment for me. I have been asked to complete a AQ-10 form but these ten questions don't put me in the referral category - does that mean the doc won't take it further? I have many traits of autism and my father, brother and son also have this. I would really like help on the social side of things and start to make some connections and understanding. It seems a very simplistic set of questions and we all know autism is complex especially when you have learnt to hide lots of it. Is it worth pursuing based on the AQ-10 or will the GP tell me 'no'?

  • Some of the questions are aimed at false stereotypes - "I like to collect information about categories of things", "I usually notice car number plates or similar strings of information", and "I am fascinated by dates". I'm a 'white male' autistic, and none of these things are remotely interesting or applicable to me.

  • Yep - one of my first thoughts when I first saw that form was "no wonder high-functioning (I don't like that term but it'll do for now) women are chronically under-diagnosed if that's the first hurdle."

  • I’m the same I score low 30s on the AQ-50 and 140ish on RAADS but only about 5 on AQ-10. They say the AQ-10 is a specially selected summary but if your traits aren’t multiple  and/or stereotypical or you’re good at masking I think it misses the mark a bit. Especially if you aren’t the stereotypical white male the criteria are based on. I would do the AQ-10 for them but also present your AQ 50 score to them as well

  • ... would it be terribly unethical of me to suggest lying on the AQ-10 form?

  • When I first went to my GP about getting an assessment, she told me that they'd need the AQ10 form to make a funding decision - I guess the primary care trust needed some cursory evidence before it'd spend the money on an assessment referral.

This being the case, I think it might be out of your GPs hands exactly what kinds of evidence they'd accept or not accept.

  • All the tests are available online. The AQ50 is said to be more accurate, but the RAADS-R seems to give a more definite yes/no result.

  • Take the aq50 and the RAADS-R tests. If these are higher then you maybe able to justify further review. If not then I’d say it might be hard to take further…. Just my opinion I’m no expert.
