any thoughts on a ketogenic diet,(low in sugars) as a treatment for Autism.., I came across this when studying aging and cancer with Glycolysis when the end of the chromosomes called telomere gets taken over by cancer, makes the cell grow and grow,, so your new immortal cancer cell kills you by using a glucose cycle. A ketogenic diet kills of the cancer cells by removing the glucose fuel feed.

  • Change is slow as your gut ecosystem has to catch up. That can take easily 3 months plus, even if suddenly your diet is perfect. Your body also has to detoxify itself, and that can be a year to get much out, and years to get the final dregs out, even with concerted effort like doing bowel, kidney, liver and lymph cleanses. But if that's the only way to do it then better to start now as otherwise things won't change at all. And better to do as much as you can, than nothing. Good luck!

  • My diet is so diffetent to where I was in my twenties, and I'm so much better for it, that it's hard to say what things. But here's a few of the salient changes, some of which aided others:

    - self administered colon irrigation with chamomille tea a few times over a few weeks (don't use tap water. The chlorine kills gut bacteria)

    - eating a small wholemeal lunch of eg brown rice and mung bean, plus a salad to bulk me up. This seemed to stop cravings for sugar, chocolate and stuffing bread as soon as i got home

    - eating lots of dark greens, eg kale, and bitter ones, eg chichory. I'm always on better form after 2 days of greens

    - getting up the same time everyday. I guess it regulates your metabolism. I resisted this all my life. I was definitely a night owl and loved that, but now I'm awake all day, full of energy and clear headed. I get up at 7, and mostly go to bed 10:15-45.

    - for me physical exercise everday is a game changer. I do something for 30-60 mins everyday at 7:30am. My mental health couldn't cope without it.

    - dropping caffeine, bit by bit. Don't go cold turkey it'll shock your mind and body, and everyone around you

    - I don't do dairy which I think got rid of my sluggishness, and I def became trimmer; I also mostly avoid refined wheat, and sugar.

Basically the modern diet is so denatured you could see it as a lot to avoid. Instead I'd focus on the idea of what to include, eg greens, pulses, grains and for me i just steadily lost interest in the things people think of avoiding.

Perhaps what really worked for me is I started seeing a natropathic herbalist who advised me on diet things that suited my body; I did a short evening course in Ayervedic food which again taught me how to read my bodily needs; I did a few one day courses in eg chinese cooking; and read a few books. Slowly over the years I just learnt stuff. I am transformed, but it's been a slow journey, but I've enjoyed it, and am so happy with where i've got to.

oh, buying an elec pressure cooker was key!

  • I am being serious, I have tried Paleo, Keto,Vegan, Vegetarian diet, Gluten, Lactose, no added sugar and no sweeteners diet and nothing has improve my concentration, anxiety and stomach issues.

What things have worked for you ?, What thing do you general Avoid ?

  • I've followed a wholemeal, mostly organic, vegan diet for 17 years. Ok, i cook almost everything from scratch, an elec pressure cooker helps. But wowser, I've felt on top form ever since!

The sugar cravings have dropped to an extent I'm never even tempted unless it's put directly in front of me. My best autistic mate alwYs comments how much beter he feels when he hangs out and eats with me regular. Just a portion of white rice and I can tell I've dropped to 80-90% me. And recommend it.

And diet has an impact on ailments and illnesses. 40% of cancers go into self remission prior to diagnosis. There's alot of emerging s ientific literature, but not enough to persuade the massess cos of course there's no money or careers to be made in diet recommendations instead of pills. I had a terminal tumour diagnosis which like many I survived with no treatment apart from my own self help: diet, exercise, tai chi, yoga, herbs, therapy, ... .

  • intermittent fasting is what i've done for almost three years. one day i just started. i've never done keto. weston price, a dentist of a hundred years ago, their people also advocate intermittent fasting, along with a lot of phats. i eat all the phats i desire, altho my doc complains of my cholesterol numbers. my bp is excellent for my age, wo statins, etc.

  • No, diets can't cure autism or cancer!. Anyway, autism is not a disease but a different way of being. I follow Daoist practices, like cha dao- the way of tea. Try to relax (even though this is difficult), go slow, take time, be mindful. This helps me.
